by: Mike Sampson Feb. 9, 2010

After a few months worth of negotiations, Paramount was able to get Tom Cruise to sign on the line that is dotted. The actor will return to star in MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE 4, which he will co-produce with JJ Abrams. Abrams, who directed the last MISSION film, will not step behind the camera again but the search is already on for a director who's ready to take on the challenge.

Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec, who were hired to write a draft back in August, are still working on the script and whatever they have concocted, it was enough to garner the interest of Cruise, who can be a tough guy to nail down when it comes to movies. Deadline is reporting that despite rumors to the contrary, MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE 4 won't team Ethan Hunt up with a younger agent or make him some kind of Mr. Miyagi to a new IMF team.

Paramount expects M:I4 to be Cruise's next film with a Memorial Day, 2011 release date planned. Filming is expected to begin this summer. Cruise can be seen next in another action/spy flick KNIGHT & DAY this summer.

Source: Deadline

Extra Tidbit: Applebaum and Nemec previously worked on the TV series "October Road."

I'm glad this is getting a good reception. It was pretty annoying when people were slamming Cruise's films because of his personal life, and the Mission Impossible series is a great franchise. You don't see it very often when each film has its own unique style, and visionary director. I hope they bag someone good to keep the tradition going.

Freakin' sweeeeeet!!! Glad that Abrams is at least involved somehow, too bad he isn't directing though. The 3rd is my personal favorite, and completely underrated...

Mission:Impossible is one of the best movies ever. M:I:III is one of the best action flicks of the last decade. Granted, M:I:II sucked nuts. So this really could go either way. I really wish JJ was directing. I'd me much more confident in the flick's quality...

Do I need another Mission Impossible. No. Will I love it all the same. You bet. As long as the bad guy isn't a fallen/traiterous IMF agent again.

Tom is the man. I am happy to hear that his talents are still going to be used for this franchise.

At first I'm skeptic about this. And I'm agree with The_Soloist, when there's no Reboot or Reborn or whatever word that is, I'm happy! Bring on a sequel that is Sequel. Cruise still got it in terms of action star.

Finally a franchise without the word REBOOT in it. And also, I am glad he will not be a mentor either...that would suck

Finally a franchise that hasn't rebooted itself and is actually going to have continuity from its previous movies. I love all 3 Mission Impossible movies, the 2nd being my favorite. This is very good news. AND GUESS WHAT NO 3D!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tarantino is my pick for director.

This is a surprise
For a while, I thought Paramount was gonna get rid of Tom Cruise and reboot the series, since MI:3 didn't do super-good domestically. Nice to see that they decided to stay the course and not take the easy way out. I'd like to see Kathryn Bigelow take a crack at it!

Best news I've heard in a while...

... that J.J. "shake the camera 'til they puke" Abrams won't be directing.

Fin-cher! Fin-cher! Fin-cher!

MI3 was a pleasant surprise.. and no, please don't bring back John Woo. MI2 was the worst in the trilogy and we need more team chemistry like the 1st and 3rd. I welcome this flick!

Oh and let Ethan hawke
be his brother who has become a rogue agent. I see alot of tom cruise in him and always thought he would be a perfect follow-up to cruise.

It all comes down to a director now!
I'm totally stoked for this as I looove the first and third MI films. If they carry on the tone that Abrams set for the third film it will work. Just pick a damn good director please for the love of all that is good in this world!
