The Wizard of Oz: the inevitable remake - in 3D, of course

Tim Burton's trippy triple-dimensional ALICE IN WONDERLAND snatched up over $200 million worldwide during its opening weekend, so studios are unsurprisingly looking for their own vivid mainstream 3D freakout.

Why not the mother of all nightmare-inducing "family" movies, THE WIZARD OF OZ? Yes, the LA Times says that Warner Bros. plans to force Dorothy back into the realm populated by frightened feline, heartless robot, brainless straw man, wicked witch, tuneful dwarfs, agitated trees, a giant disembodied shouting head, and an army of terrifying flying monkeys, oh god the monkeys.

The studio is reportedly eyeballing a couple of already-in-development projects to reshape and push forward, including OZ (from SHREK FOREVER AFTER co-writer Darren Lemke), and a darker variation from scribe Josh Olson (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) focusing on a granddaughter of Dorothy who returns to Oz to fight evil.

The source material, L. Frank Baum's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", is in the public domain, but the original movie version is owned by MGM (which is apparently owned by WB).

The studio is reportedly still in the early phase on the OZ update, but have already put the word out to A-list directors.

Extra Tidbit: I think I'll just ease on down the road.

I want no one but Burton Directing this. His wacky vision has worked wonders for AIW, now let's see him do Oz. I also think it would be awesome to see Depp play 3 characters, The lion, the scarecrow and tin man. I hope to jesus that this happens. The original is a classic, but it's still just an adaption of a book. There shouldn't be anyone saying that no one else is allowed to adapt the book w...

Saw this coming, but instead of remake, how about they just go to the source material and do their own thing?

HELL F***ING NO!!!!
No, absolutely not. If they do this then I will never ever go see another Warner Bros. film again. Nope, not even another Batman movie, though it will pain me to do so. This is one step away from remaking Casablanca or Gone with the Wind. Stay away from the real classics, Warner Bros. NOW, if they do decide to make a somewhat original "sequel" or separate entity of the series, FINE, but DO. NOT...

Anyone who didn't see a Wizard Of Oz remake coming needs a firm slap up side the head. I'm not excited but I'm not surprised.

To WB: Produce a sequel (like Return to Oz) or a new story that takes place in Oz (like Tin Man) if you must, but don't remake the original!

I loved John Ritter in The Dreamer of Oz [link] He's one of the first things that pops in my head when someone mentions Oz. You should all check it out.

Ok, but it's not a remake. I mean, if they go with this OZ idea, it's more of a sequel, or a [link] of a classic story. I don't see how this is any different than doing a new version of Robin Hood or Peter Pan...The Wizard of Oz is a classic film and deserves respect, absolutely. If this gets put in the right hands, who is to say this ...

I know what will happen. They'll remake the original 1939 movie. It will be very similar. People will just say it's another adaptation. It's going to happen, it happened with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Why not write something original?!

Focus on creating your own mythology. Something the studio can set the bar for and influence future generations. Get off...

This is a really REALLY bad idea. The Wizard of Oz is a classic and in no way does it need to be remade. Let me guess, Tim Burton directs and Johnny Depp is The Scarecrow...

As long as it's not a direct remake I guess it'd be okay...it's not as if the wacky sequel with Fairuza Balk tarnished the legacy of the original. Bring it on!
