Indiana Jones to get a 3D re-release? You have chosen poorly.

UPDATEBig Shiny Robot contacted Lucasfilm and actually got them to respond. A rep told them that “This is completely false. Right now, we are totally focused on bringing Star Wars to 3D, and we have no plans to do an Indiana Jones conversion.”

Just the other day as I was watching BACK TO THE FUTURE again and thinking about all the refound love people seem to have for this classic trilogy, I noted that as much as I love BTTF, what I really want is the INDIANA JONES trilogy on Blu-ray. That looks like it’ll be happening soon but with an unfortunate side-effect: a 3D re-release.

Blue SKy Disney is reporting that next month Lucasfilm will announce plans to re-release the INDIANA JONES trilogy in 3D, similar to what they’re doing with the STAR WARS trilogy. According to the site, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK will be the first film to hit theaters but so far there’s no date attached to any of the films.

While this obviously gives a new 3D meaning to “Throw me the idol and I’ll throw you the whip!,” it just doesn’t make any sense. The STAR WARS movies make sense in 3D, even if I don’t necessarily agree with the conversion. There’s nothing about the INDIANA JONES movies that calls for a third dimension. I mean the film was designed as a throwback to the classic film serials of the 30s and 40s. There’s something classic about it and while I’d love a new remaster of the trilogy, the idea of seeing it in 3D just goes against everything I love about the films.

George Lucas, I know you’re strapped for cash and could use a couple extra bucks but please, let us have this one. You know what, you can even convert CRYSTAL SKULL to 3D. You can have that one. Do whatever you want with that film. But please leave the original trilogy alone.
