There are a handful of directors out there that have created some pretty inventive and daring films over the past few years. Christopher Nolan is one of them. His work including MEMENTO, INSOMNIA and THE PRESTIGE have garnered some very favorable reviews. But for him to take on BATMAN BEGINS, it was a risk that maybe his Batman wouldn’t live up to the earlier incarnations of the legendary character. Yet he did it, he reintroduced the character as well as anyone could have. But it is with THE DARK KNIGHT, Christopher has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was absolutely the right choice.
When we spoke, I was really excited to talk to him. But at the same time, there was a very strong sense of seriousness at the junket. As filmgoers, we were all shocked with the passing of Heath Ledger, but these people worked with him every day. They knew him as a friend on a much more personal level. So truthfully, I wasn’t sure if it would be the right time to talk about him. But luckily, I did feel that it would be very appropriate to talk about his performance with Christian, along with Aaron Eckhart who is also terrific in the film. I had such a good time talking to him about the film and about how he really brought Gotham City to life. And yes, this is the week that most of you have been waiting for. THE DARK KNIGHT is finally here, opening Friday (or Thursday at midnight if you have tickets) at a theatre near you.

All anyone had to do was see his first effort " Following " to realize he was destined for greatness and that Nolan was a unique talent . Now with the Batman films the mainstream has finally realized his talents and caught up to the art house crowd .
With success comes the usual envy and his work will be scrutinized even more as his popularity and body of increases . |

BALTIMORE SUN
Meh, just chill a little about the review, dude.
As fan-fucking-tastic as TDK is (I saw it for the second time in two days tonight) it still has its flaws, albeit fairly minor ones. That's something I'll readily admit, and this is coming from a guy who loves this kinda movie.
For all we know, this dude is prejudiced against comic flicks... Or maybe if he seriously felt that TDK was somewhat on par with Meet Dave, his head is just up his arse as far as taste in movies goes.
Regardless, it's just one guy's opinion. Going to a forum to blast him won't change that opinion, and it won't do any favours to TDK fans either. Just enjoy the movie for what it is. |

REVIEWS
Fellow joblo fans I woke up this morning to see my local paper, the Baltimore Sun give The Dark Knight a "C" - read here for horrible review- http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertai..., 7616380.story - the same person also gave Meet Dave a "C" and his review pisses me off so much I wanted to see how many of you could go to the forum and just blast this guy.

DESTINED FOR GREAT THINGS
I really hate it when people say "This guy is the new [insert respected director here]" coz to me it sort of cheapens the director's worth as an auteur, in the sense that it almost implies that their filmmaking style is reminiscent of somebody else's, and so it can't really be distinctive to them.
With that pretentious-sounding bit out of the way, if I had to compare Nolan to any great director who had come before him, it'd be Michael Mann. Obviously I'm not gonna say he's the new Michael Mann coz that'd be a good way to look like a dick by contradicting myself.
They do have their similarities though. Both of them seem to have a knack for understated, but nonetheless powerful character studies and manage to find room for a bit of excitement in their films. And the dude hasn't even hit 40 yet. I think we can expect many great films to come.
Good interview too. |
