Is Nolan Done? Aug. 27, 2008

Source: H. Reporter

While the interweb runs rampant with outlandish casting rumours surrounding the follow up to Chris Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT (Rosie O'Donnell as Clayface?) most have chosen to ignore the fact that Nolan himself has not even signed on for the third installment. I guess it's just assumed that 500 million domestically and counting means "f*ck yeah let's do it again!"

Apparently not. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan, who is on a much needed vacay, has yet to commit to the daunting task. In the article, THE DARK KNIGHT producer Charles Roven says:

There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it, but it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on. When he comes back, we will see how he feels.

If Nolan does in fact decide not to return, may I suggest Joel Schumacher as a possible replacement? Something tells me he would do a fantastic job.

Extra Tidbit: Batman 3 casting rumours! Which ones suck and which kick serious tail!?!

On another note however... am I the only one who doesnt think two face is dead? they say that Harvy Dent was dead but that doesnt mean jack for two face. In this film they very much wanted the two characters to be eparate, even though they are the same entitiy. I dunno. I just feel like its more of a cliche to kill the villan at the end. They bury Dent for the public but im sure two face is in alylum

I would be pissed if I were Nolan and I saw some dumb shit article like this. He did The Prestige after Batman Begins, we didn't see anything out of Knight until after Prestige. So what makes us think that Nolan is ready to sign on to a new film a month after Dark Knight hits?? He's got a LOT of time to spend making a script because a third film is not set up as nicely as the second one was. Dumb article still

fuck it, he shouldn't do it. the dark knight was perfect. can't we all just revel in that a bit? i think it'd be cool if he let it sit for awhile and make a third film in like 10 or 12 years with all the same main character actors and play it with an aging batman, something like what metal gear solid 4 did with snake except not as extreme. you could give alfred the butler a good death if michael caine doesn't die before then. the city has a chance to evolve and devolve in its respective ways and we can meet the same batman in a changed gotham. go into bruce wayne's psychological breakdown that must've followed after he was turned on by all the people he protected and the person he loved as bruce wayne (rachel dawes) has perished. man, it would kick ass. grow some patience kids!

I honestly believe Nolan will not make another Batman film. He has almost no reason to. He's a small indie director, he shouldn't give a shit about money or fame. I honestly believe he's said everything he wants to in the batman universe, and that's fine with me. I would prefer things stay on a high note, instead of every other fucking superhero trilogy where the second is the best and the third is the worst.

That being said, they will make a 3rd batman. And I hope we get Depp as the riddler.

The third movie will be good, just not chris nolan good. And this way nolan can work on another great film (prestige 2...*fingers crossed*)

I agree with LoCkEd_N_LoAdEd, if Nolan doesn't come back there shouldn't be another Batman film. And as for another movie with Nolan, I'm not saying he can't top it, but it was the best fucking Bat-movie ever with the best villian in the Batman universe. Any other villian to follow up wouldn't be able to top the preformance of Heath as Joker or the character of Joker himself.

I don't know that's just me thinking.

Although I will completely understand Nolan's reasons for not coming back, I would like to see a third movie to round out the series. We don't even have the batcave yet, which was kind of hinted at in the end of batman begins. Even if the 3rd movie doesn't top the dark knight, as long as it is good i'll be happy. (think return of the jedi compared to empire).

Until we actually know who the villians will be I won't make any casting choices.

keeping in mind not just heath's performance... but the caliber of the joker as the villian
it's widely known that the joker is the greatest villian ever created, so how could he top it?

TDK was an instant classic. it was perfect in every way to me. the dialouge, acting, action, morality of good and evil. the best superhero movie of all time for me. if i were nolan, i wouldnt come back. because i would feel accomplished. i would feel that this is the movie that i always wanted to make. this is my vision and this was my goal. he accomplished it and now people are praising him. in my opinion i would leave the dark knight alone. no sequel because TDK was soo good how would he even top it? and the legendary rivalry between joker and batman. the joker is the only villain you need for a sequel. dont re-cast ledger in honor of his death. his death actually made this film a legend. best performances i've seen in my life. if Nolan decides to come back theres no doubt in my mind that i'm going to see this film. but i just cant imagine nolan making batman 3 MORE than TDK was. i hope he knows what to do. i hope that if he comes back he realizes he's going to be directing the best movie in cinematic history and certainly the most anticipated film of all time. he knows whats expected of him. please Chris, dont make a mistake and dont let your fans down. we support you 100% with whatever you do. at least i do. lol. "With great power comes great responsibility." goodluck Chris.

As much as some people think Nolan has done all that he needs to do for the Batman franchise, I'm pretty sure he'll return for a third. A fourth would be pushing it so lets not even go that far yet, but a third is a definite 'yes'. Although TDK looked pretty conclusive, there are tons of plots and angles there that were left hanging, and people like Nolan NEVER begin a story that they won't personally end. He knows how the story goes and don't be surprised if he had the entire trilogy up in his head even before starting Batman Begins, despite him denying the fact. Maybe he doesn't divide the story into three parts, but he has an idea, I'm sure. He started the series, TDK was the middle, and there has to be a conclusion. *SPOILERS* Heck, I won't be surprised if he brought The Joker back by recasting him. We all know he had plans for the Clown Prince in the third installment. If he was bold enough to allow The Joker to survive in TDK, what makes us think that he won't simply bring the character back for another round? Heath Ledger will always be uber-fantastic and remembered, but who's to say Nolan will not find someone worthy of the role?

As far as casting goes, I don't know. No villain stands up to the magnitude of The Joker...and that's probably why Nolan knew for sure that he had to bring him back. Tragedy struck, and that's probably the only reason why Nolan is holding back. We'll never know for sure.

As for casting rumors, I think they will go somewhere we are not thinking. Look at the casting of Ledger and Eckhart for TDK. So when I hear Johnny Depp as The Riddler - I think no way. They will probably do another "off-beat" casting choice, not uber-famous like Angelina Jolie as Catwoman. And while I love Carla Gugino ever since I first saw her in Spin City, I don't think she will get the call. I would love it if she did, but I don't see it happening. Perhaps if they don't cast Rachael McAdams as Lois Lane (I am trying to start that rumor...:)) in the reboot of Superman, she can be considered for Catwoman.

Y'know, "The Dark Knight" could've been just the second half of "Batman Begins" for all we know. I know there are very few directors I'd even consider handing this particular Batman franchise over to if Nolan decided to back out.

What I actually expect will happen, is he'll make something else before he does a third Batman. I think it would be good for him therapeutically, anyway.

And as far as I know, Bale said if Nolan agreed, he'd be fine coming back. But Nolan hasn't made plans. Not to mention with the grand scale and praise for the second entry it would be a pity to undercut that with an inferior third film a la Spider-Man.

My gut feeling says nolan will return eventually for Batman 3 but I honestly could not watch it if Nolan opted to not return. Well, unless they got a good director on par with Nolan.

I understand Nolan's need for a break. Hell, he's made three very good films in three years, imagine the manic pace of such a work ethic. But I can't sit still until he commits to 3. Come on now, Chris, don't give us the beginning and the middle without the end! I don't mind if he makes another film in between ala Prestige to take a break and recharge his creative energies, but I just need to hear him say, "I'm on it but give me time." I just want confirmation.

Didn't Nolan and Bale say they didn't want Batman in a JLA movie until they did their third movie?

Now the guy has all the money and respect that he will ever need. He can do anything he likes. If he's not interested in being a Hollywood Blockbuster Director then that's fine by me. Go back to telling smaller interesting stories.

If Nolan doesn't go for a third, perhaps Fincher would be able to carry on the legacy... I mean, he's definitely familiar with that whole 'gritty' style.. just don't let Schumacher ever touch this franchise again. EVER.

You'd hope that the studios would be smart enough to see what's working and run with it, but that may be giving them too much credit (have you seen the letter Jeff Robinov sent out saying that they plan on making all their DC properties dark and brooding like TDK? That shows that they are quite far from "getting it").

Also, while I'm also anxious to see what post-Batman projects Nolan chooses to persue, I think he actually has put a pretty unique take on the series. I mean his films and Burtons were both "dark" versions of the mythos and yet look how different they've turned out.

I think saying Nolan is capable of more than superhero movies is selling him and the film both a little short. Most critics (Corliss, Ebert, Phillips, Roeper and Wilosnki to name a few) are calling TDK his most accomplished work yet. Will he some day make a better movie than TDK? Probably. But many, many people consider (fan and critic alike) consider it his best work so far.

Honestly, I'm just happy he even touched the series. He resurrected this from the very, very deep grave Schumacher tossed it in.

I would love it more than anything if he went back - it could only get better - but if he decides he's done, good on him. He knows what he's doing.

But abandoning? That's harsh. If he feels like he's done all he wants, it's only fair.

Does it really matter that much if Nolan comes back for #3? Yeah, he's done a good job twice now, but it's not like he's made very personal movies here. He just treated the characters and world with more respect than anyone has before in the movies. I'd like to think the studio is smart enough to be able to see that's what's working, and hire someone else who normally makes great critically acclaimed dramas/thrillers to put together another "realistic" Batman movie. That'd be good enough. Let Nolan move on if he wants to, I'd like to see something more in line with Memento, he's capable of so much more than "a good superhero movie."

I don't know, but I hope Catwoman is in it. I feel like it wouldn't be right to ignore that huge chunk of the Batman mythos. I think Catwoman is arguably one of the top villains (under the Joker, of course) in Batman's Rogues Gallery. And I could barely imagine Christopher Nolan's take on the character.

And I think he'll do another Batman. If he didn't, I would lose a bit of respect for the man for sort of abandoning the series like that.
