Jackson is Fury! Feb. 25, 2009

Sam Jackson, Nick Fury It seems Marvel finally decided to stop dicking around and give Sam Jackson a proper offer to reprise his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury in the upcoming IRON MAN sequel. In fact, they must have given Jackson one hell of an offer because he signed up to appear as Fury in as much as nine future Marvel films including THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS, something called THE SHIELD (a stand-alone Fury film perhaps?) and potential sequels. Suffice to say, we'll be seeing a hell of a lot more of Jackson as Fury. Which is pretty great since it'll just add fantastic synergy among all these films, making them all chapters in one big universe. Just like the comics! But that's only one wrong that they've righted with their upcoming slate. What they need to do now is stop dicking around with Mickey Rourke and give him a proper offer. Right? Strike back thoughts below.

Extra Tidbit: Fury first appeared in "Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos" #1 in 1963.

Jackson only has one character that he plays in every single movie he's in.. The angry black man who swears a lot. I'm so sick of the hype around him. Pulp Fiction should have been his only movie.

Considering that the Ultimates version of Fury was molded after Jackson this is good news. There is literally a point in the beginning of the series where he, as the character, flat out says that only Sam Jackson could play him in a movie. So it works both ways. And as for Black Widow, for f-sakes get that Olga chick from Hitman. There's already enough A-listers in this...go out on a limb a little bit. And forget Rourke as Dynamo. They already had a big metal freak villain in the first one...throwing in another one would be like the last Hulk flick...two of the same looking characters fighting gets a little muddled after a bit. It'd be interesting if they threw Mandarin in there, since they referenced him in the first one. Maybe even a little Lady Mandarin fighting (since the X series screwed up Psylocke)

I was on the fence about SJ in this role, but he's growing on me. I agree w/ Kid_Zombie, no ScarJo. Seriously. Gotta get Rourke on this BIATCH! They need to be very careful with how many characters they put in the next one. Don't want to overkill it with marvel characters. I just saw Don Cheadle in Traitor and I must say I'm looking forward to seeing him play Rhodes. Howard didn't do it for me either. Although Hustle and Flow was the sheet!!

I like this news. It dosent bother me them having the Ultimate version of Nick fury in the movies. But Sam Jackson does bother me. Just not a big Fan of his. I'm happy they got him though only because he already played the role and i hate recasts in series. (but i do love the recast of Howard, i thought he was the weakest point in Iron Man) As for Mickey Rouke, I don't think it matters at all if they get him. If he is crimson dymano he'll be a voice in a suit with 10 mins of screen time out of it. But if hes playing WhipLash PLEASE get him! I think he'll be a great Whiplash. please no SCAR.JO.! She looks more like Ms.marvel then a Black Widow. And whats the word on Sam Rockwell? Is he still in this? every things about Mickey I havent heard anything about Rockwell since they announced his name.

I am not being and asshole or a racist, but I think the character does not work well in the mold of Sam Jackson. I may not have the most popular opinion here, and I do not care. I think that Nick Fury should be a white guy. If you disagree with me fine, but no need to call names. I was just stating my opinion, and any names you call me will not change my opinion.

I also have a problem with Sam J. in this because he play the same role in every film and this nick Fury will be nothing like it's cource material, it will just be Sam Jackson - all the cursing! (YAWN)

Nice point about the age, I was (purposedly) a little pessimistic - even if your (sarcastic?) 14 movies prediction seems a stretch, I give you that he might pull it off. If they keep the rhythm steady, and if the comics-to-film fad doesn't lose steam. Those are hefty big Ifs, but you have a point.

However, I stand to my beef about the uselesness of crossing the comics integrity over another media. First - allow me to be opinionated for a moment - I thought it didn't add anything remotely meaningful to Iron Man or Hulk 2. These (especially the former) contained unnecessary cameos and winks to the audience but nothing that made them a whole. In fact, there were more bridges between TIH and Ang Lee's Hulk than with Iron Man, which is a bit weird for a supposed "reboot". I for one thought that Stark and Fury's respective cameos were just cheap fan-service (but that's just, like, my opinion, man^^).

Besides, comics are a more centralized media where creator owned content is the exception and hired guns are the rule, while movies (at least, the ones that are worth fueling our expectations) are a collaborative effort led by a stronger driving force - namely, a director. What if a director wants to give a specific spin (say, a 1960's reboot of the FF a la The Incredibles) but Marvel passes on because "it doesn't fit into the Cinematic Marvel Universe" and negates their cameo policy? As a moviegoer, if I have to weigh between the artistically ambitious and "different" concepts, and the manufactured and patented formulas on the other hand... I prefer the stuff that doesn't belong but takes chances. Just because it works on a 24-pages a month basis doesn't mean it works on a 24 frames/second as far as I'm concerned. I can see what the appeal is, but I think it's just a smoke screen to butter up the fans. I'm no hater, just highly skeptical about the approach.

Jackson will be 61 this year. It's not like there's ONE director doing all the Marvel movies. We had TWO in one year in 2008. You've got Iron Man 2 and Thor in 2010, Captain America and The Avengers in 2011, A second Hulk in one of those years also. That's SEVEN Marvel Universe movies in FOUR Years!! That puts Sam Jackson at 65. So, at that same rate, you've got FOURTEEN Marvel Univer movies before Sam Jackson is 70... You're way off Alcibiades. And what doors will doing this "close" as you put it? Has it closed any doors in the comics?? Nope. Nick Fury has crossed over so many different storylines over the years, as has the Avengers. It will be great to FINALLY have a FAITHFUL Comic universe...

I might be in the minority, but I think shoehorning the comics' universal integrity into the movie world is not the best thing they can do. It's pushing the supposed "faithfulness" way too far just to butter up some fans, and closes more doors than it opens new ones artistically speaking.

Besides, they'll never make NINE movies with Sam Jackson. By the time they churn out their third Iron Man film he'll be zeroing in on his 70's. I know he doesn't look that old, but still...
