Jackson writes Hobbit Aug. 19, 2008
Source: Hollywood Reporter
by: Dave Davis

To complement and officialize today's earlier bit from director Guillermo del Toro, things are indeed meandering forward on THE HOBBIT -- with the original Tolkein adapters at the inkwell.

It was announced that the original LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy trio of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be working on the script for the two new HOBBIT movies (or THE HOBBIT and its "supplement", or whatever) along with GdT.

I don't think there was much doubt this would happen, although the press release claims that they capped off "an eight-month search for a scribe to tackle the coveted task of bringing the literary classic to the big screen" before deciding to just do it themselves. After KING KONG, I only hope they exercise a degree of self-editing.

Extra Tidbit: Good luck, Guillermo -- see you in four years!

This is great news (if not obvious news). Maybe the hardest of the hardcore fans aren't pleased but the general public and box office numbers don't lie...they made three great films and it will probably take a force of nature to screw these two up.

(elf singing sequences should be considered a force of nature.)

King Kong was a fantasic movie all around, and I have no problem dedicating more time to a great piece of cinema. There are long movies, and then there are Looooong movies, but Jackson has always known how to keep the audience intersted for 3 hours plus. I really hope him and Toro can do the same with the Hobbit.

LOVED MOST OF KING KONG!
Here's hoping this is good. From the bloody brilliant "Dead Alive" or "Braindead" in the rest of the world. I have seen all of the goriest film, & it is not only the goriest & gruesome of all time & NO "Cannibal Halocaust" isn't despite you loyal fans, it has a great amount of special effects & comedy. For those that have seen it all I have to say is Lungs & Mirror, & Neck & food, you will know what I mean. I think Peter passing this off says he is done, despite him doing the script. I love Guillermo, but "Hellboy 2" wasn't great & although good & one of the most beautiful musical scores of recent memory, "Pans Labyrinth" wasn't the greatest movie ever made. Del Toro's "The Devils Backbone" was better. Too bad no one has never seen it or heard of it. I am sick of just about all remakes, especially movies that came out when I was a kid, but "King Kong" was one that I was O.K. with. It is just about a perfect movie, but almost the whole boat sequence could have been cut down to about 5 minutes & no one would have missed it. Despite all the complaining, Yes parts of the Dinosaur sequence looks bad (not Kong fighting the T-Rex-like dino's mind you, that was the coolest CG since I saw the T-Rex in "Jurassic Park" in theaters) it still made over $550 million worldwide, so most didn't care too much. It also has the most expressive so-called Monster ever put on screen. Even Gollum from "Ring's" isn't that impressive.

JUST THE FACTS MA'AM...
Unless Peter Jackson's wife has undergone gender relocation surgery since our last visit to Middle Earth, her name is Fran, not 'Frank'. I point this out only to save JoBlo the horrors of a lawsuit with the Jackson camp and the ensuing hate-off that seems to be the popular outcome of these litigious affairs.

And King Kong was a grand cinematic spectacle. MTV has ruined your minds. Eat more vegetables.

This is bloody fantastic news. I kinda always knew this is how that aspect would be. Can't wait to see how this develops.

I absolutely love every single second of King Kong and actually think it could have benefitted from being longer after seeing some of the deleted scenes on the extended DVD. I was kinda pissed that the scenes they didn't finish and put back into the movie were for the most part better than the ones they did.

But anyway, yeah. Everyone else I know hates it. And Lord of the Rings. Which I also friggin love. So I guess everyone else sucks.

HOBBITS
King Kong was an amazing epic and I thought Jackson did an incredible job on it. Anyway, I'm very excited for these upcoming Hobbit films. Glad Guillermo's directing and Jackson and co's writing. I don't see how you can go wrong :)

King Kong is sadly underrated. It was overly-long, yes, but it was epic and brought a classic B-movie into A-list glory. The one thing I truly didn't like about it was Jack Black butchering the last line of film, other than that, I enjoyed every minute.

And The Hobbit's gonna kick ass.

amen to the comment on self-editing. They could have removed that entire story line from King Kong about the two crew members on the boat and nobody would have noticed.
