If you think that you and your fellow moviegoers are the only ones bemoaning all the toys and board games currently set for feature film adaptations, you’ve just landed a powerful ally.
Speaking to a German publication, James Cameron lambasts the BATTLESHIP movie specifically:
“We have a story crisis. Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film. This is pure desperation. Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hit theaters. If a brand has been around, Harry Potter for example, or Spider-Man, you are light years ahead. And there lies the problem. Because unfortunately these franchises are become more ridiculous. Battleship. This degrades the cinema.”
Clearly, he has yet to hear about the proposed Ouija Board, Rubik’s Cube and Viewfinder films, and I wouldn’t want to be in the room when he does.
Say he’s a hypocrite all you want for taking nearly all of AVATAR’s major plot points from POCAHONTAS, DANCES WITH WOLVES and FERNGULLY, but the man does know how to create an original universe, and more often than not, an original story, and I completely agree with his sentiments about BATTLESHIP here. It IS a disgrace, and for the life of me, I don’t understand why the Battleship name even had to be brought up. You want to make a movie where naval warships captained by Rihanna fight aliens? Great. But why bring the toy into it?
