Jason Segel is seeking romantic comedy perfection for Five-Year Engagement

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

I miss the days of a good romantic comedy.

Now it just feels like any asshole can slap together a so-called “romantic comedy” that millions of women will flock to. As a woman, I get it. Every great once in awhile some rom-com will come along and excite our interests. Anytime WHEN HARRY MET SALLY is on television, I’ll tune in. It doesn’t matter what part it’s at. Since it’s so close to Christmas, I’ve been wanting to re-watch LOVE ACTUALLY. “To me, you are perfect.” Le sigh.

That being said even though he is working on THE MUPPETS, Jason Segel is also hard at work on the script for FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT. In November, we had hardly any details on the project. All we knew was that Emily Blunt was starring, Segel and Nicholas Stroller were writing, and Judd Apatow was producing.

In an interview with EW, Segel gives some more info as well his goal for the script, “We will start shooting in April. It is a romantic comedy. Our goal is Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally and if we get within their stratosphere of substance, we will be happy. It really dissects relationships and aims to show how complicated they are over a long period of time. This is a five-year period and in that time things change and morph and the power dynamic shifts and people wane and eyes wonder and you question everything and this movie is about that in a funny way, I hope.”

Jason Segel is the man. I really think if someone can revive the rom-com genre, it could be him.
