I don't profess to know much, if anything, about The Grateful Dead, but it's heard to imagine their story not making an interesting movie. Now it looks like the life of Jerry Garcia will get the biopic treatment from the producers of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. Like many rock biopics before it, the film will focus on Garcia's early years before he joined the band. Expect the latter part of the film to be his first musical encounters with future Dead members like Phil Lesh. Topper Lilien (WHERE THE MONEY IS, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS) will write the script based on the book "Dark Star" by Robert Greenfield, which is like an oral history of Garcia's life based on accounts from friends, relatives and musicians. The one issue that seems to slow down most musician biopics (like the numerous Janis Joplin movies) - music rights - won't be much of an issue here since the movie takes place before the Grateful Dead was formed.

Extra Tidbit: I was at a wedding the other day and heard a song called "Ripple" that was actually really good.

Are they that terrible?
To those who don't seem to get it... But they lasted 30 yrs and they have interesting history and a large cult following.

I dig metal, punk/alternative shite and still enjoyed their Live Dead album

another cool info
To add: Grateful Dead did contribute the 80's version of Twilight Zone theme song. And boy, I felt their version is trippier and creepier than the original.

Woah
To be honest I didn't know much abt Grateful Dead other than they are obviously one of the most important band in the history of Americana rock n roll.

What truly won me over was when I watched their DVD live - these guys are amazing and obviously innovative musicians; plus they can function as a band - w/o encumbered by egos which had inflicted so many other musicians out there....

Young punks could have easily dissed them as "grandpa band" but I've read Sonic Youth cited them as inspirations and I've heard their epic, trippy style in plenty of the current post-rock bands as well.

If I can think of anybody who can play Uncle Jerry here, it's Jack Black. They are both chubby, likable rock n rollers plus they both born in the sign of Virgo. But this just an opinion.
