JLA: The Movie?! Feb. 23, 2007

Source: Variety

That high-pitched sound you heard this morning was a nation of fanboys collectively squealing in delight at the news, announced in Variety this morning, of a planned JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. Warner Bros. has hired writers Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write a script that would focus on the Justice League of America. WB wouldn't confirm which heroes would be involved but Variety speculates they are not second-tier characters. How though do you secure deals with Brandon Routh and Christian Bale to star as Superman and Batman respectively? And do Bryan Singer and Christopher Nolan have any say of their vision of the characters? Not to mention the in-development WONDER WOMAN and FLASH movies. It's a complex matter but those questions apparently aren't being asked yet. Right now it's, "let's get a script and see where we stand after that." This is WB's second try at getting a superhero crossover film made after the failed BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN project. The studio brought the Mulroneys aboard after their work rewriting the MR. AND MRS. SMITH script (which also got the writing duo in tight with Brad Pitt). OK, now it's time for some feedback. Excited? Cautiously optimistic? Doubtful something of this scale could ever be pulled off?

Extra Tidbit: Kiernan Mulroney is the brother of actor Dermot Mulroney.

Technically this movie can be made. TECHNICALLY. Having continuity with previous films (Nolan and Singer's films respectively) is where it gets tricky and is most likely where the film will fail. Of course it could fail in other areas as well but how can you even add BATMAN to a JLA movie after Nolan's BEGINS? That movie is almost a friggin crime drama!! As much as I'd like to see this happen I think the best way for this to get done is create it as CG flick like you guys already said. Who knows? Maybe years from now this could really be something but as of right now it's very iffy. Now an ULTIMATE AVENGERS movie on the other hand....Actually that probobly wouldn't work either. By the way LALEX81, aside from UWE BOLL directing this movie that would probobly be the worst idea for this franchise that anyone could come up with.

Sound like a perfect opportunity to wast my time on a CG movie. There is NO WAY that they would get the current actors to play their respective role in a JLA film. If its gonna be soon, its gonna be CG.

Of course this movie could be incredibly cheesie on an enormous scale if it's done wrong (which it most undoubtebly will be.) But, being a gigantic fan of both the Marvel and DC universes (mostly Marvel...Spidey all the way!!) since I was four, I am super excited. Here's who should star:
Superman - Brandon Routh
Batman - Christian Bale
The Flash - Ryan Reynolds
Green Lantern - James Marsden
J'onn J'onzz (Martian Manhunter) - Doug Jones
Wonder Woman - Kate Beckinsale
Aquaman - Peter Weller
WAIT!!! What the hell am I doing!?!
Of course this movie won't be made, so why get my hopes up? The only way it could possibly work is if it's completely CG. Damn!

I think making a movie on the JLA would be difficult unless you have directors like Bryan Singer and Christopher Nolan on the job.

The problem is that there are too many 'big' characters and how are you going to showcase all of them and give them the right amount of screentime without pissing off anyone?

However there is hope since Bryan Singer did a good job with X-Men and it's A-list stars though a few, like James Marsden, really took a back seat.

I can just see this turning out like Fantastic Four. A boring movie where not much happens but it attempts to be "cool" for young teens. No offence, but I doubt this will turn out anything like I hope it will.

I am so unenthused by this it should be a crime. Call me jaded, but I am one of the legion fans of these characters and its all stacked wrong: Nolan and Singer are taking their franchise characters VERY seriously (not to mention Bale who takes everything seriously) so either the two lightning rods of the JLA would be absent, or we get some kooky movie 'elseworlds' situation with an alternative Batman and Superman, which is just TOO confusing for the moviegoing public. So your movie studio accountant goes pop and the whole thing deflates into sticky 'I blame you/no I blame you' goo. It wont happen .

Realistically I don't see how this movie could actually be done with the same actors. I think that it is a bit ambitious. But it would be cool if they could pull it off.

we can create a movie based on the Onlaught series, this way we can all see all the characters, how they die and maybe we can given them each 2mins of screen time, and focus on completely nothing. WHO WOULD THE ENEMY BE? Galactus? it must be a huge entity cause with a pack like the JLA, i wouldnt be surprise if the 'Street Thugs" stock crashed. maybe we can pull off all the villains and have them fight against JLA!!! and after that we can all try and get together "and punch out God"!!

...seriously, i almost pissed my pants with excitement. and i hate to be so pesimistic about this, but i'm putting my money that this is not going to happen...and it'll remain exactly what it has been all this time...a great idea. why? for an extremely short yet accurate list...see below:

My first reaction: AWESOME!!!

My second reaction: I honestly don't think they'll be able to get this one off the ground. First off, the budget would be astronomical. Factor in All of the special effects that would be involved in making all of the characters powers come to life. Superman Returns cost 250 million to make. Now imagine a movie with not only superman, but also wonder woman, green lantern, the flash, and aqauman. Now factor in the price they'd have to pay the actors. While Routh may be a newbie to the feature film biz, I don't think anybody could get away with short changing him after he made the WB almsot 400 million dollars world wide. Then theres Christian Bale, who is already an established actor...For that reason alone, I don't think a batman/superman flick would work, let alone a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

It would be really cool. But honestly, I just don't that it'd be possible to get a movie that gigantic off of the ground. Well, unless they crap it up with second tier characters, outdated special effects and shitty actors who will work for anything.

They need to make all the individual movies for each of the characters first. Then, after all of the backstories are explained and each of the characters are developed then they can bring them into one movie.

....Unless its a cartoon/CGI there is no way you could get actors to play these parts, you cant get the original talents involved (to expensive) and having other actors would be stupid and they would want to get paid too knowing how much this movie would make. One other thing would be that there is not be enough available screen time to present all these characters. It would be like X-Men 3 10 second intro, 10 second death.

Hopefully the writers borrow heavily from the animated show that recently ended, as I feel that show got it right for the most part. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use the same heroes too, though I would replace Hawkgirl with Aquaman.

And I actually prefer John Stewart as Green Lantern, and, lets be honest, with an ensemble cast like this, the studio would be likely to use Stewart in the name of diversity.

If you get the right script and director to deal with it like they did with the 1st 2 X-Men flicks, it would work, but you'd pretty much have to find a way to bring in Routh and Bale in to reprise their roles, question is, would those films count towards the studio's picture deals they likely cut with each actor? If that is the case, you'd think they'd recast for the JLA movie as they can make more cash off each actor in their own separate franchise. This almost sounds as if it would be better off as an animated or CGI flick, as any action sequence would be so CGI intense as is, what with the Flash's running, Green Lantern's ring, the multitude of flying heroes, etc.

The other question being, where do you draw the line in terms of characters? Do you keep it like the recent cartoon with 6 heroes, or do you make it more like Justice League Unlimited and have 30 people? For plot reasons, I figure you'd have to keep it relatively limited, otherwise you'd have too many plot lines running around for a single flick.

Maybe something like this could be pulled off if they left out the big three in terms of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Those characters are too big for just one of their own solo movies. Try to put them together with some other heroes and they will chew scenes.
I say use characters that have had a hard time getting their own film like Flash, Green Lantern and Captain Marvel. Throw in some characters that probably would never get a film like Green Arrow, Black Canary, Aquaman or whoever, and see what happens. Most likely at least one of those characters strikes a nerve with the public and gets a spin-off franchise like Wolverine.
