Joss Whedon set to direct The Avengers!

You’ve heard the rumors, now prepare for the truth: Joss Whedon will direct THE AVENGERS for Marvel Studios. Whedon is in final negotiations to direct the film and while it wasn’t specifically mentioned, I’d gather he’d be an important part in writing the script as well.

At the very least, THE AVENGERS will star Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans. You can also expect Scarlett Johansson to turn up in some capacity and I’d think Marvel would like to have Edward Norton return but that’s still way up in the air.

While Whedon is short on feature directorial experience (with only SERENITY under his belt), he’s well-versed in the comic world writing “The Astonishing X-Men” for 24 issues in 2008 and a stint on Marvel’s “The Runaways.”

With CAPTAIN AMERICA and THOR filming this year, AVENGERS looks set to begin production in 2011 for its May, 2012 release date.

What do you think about the news? Do you like Whedon as the director of what could be the biggest superhero film ever?
