Kombat Begins? Mar. 29, 2007

When philosophers look over the major travesties of the 20th Century, you can be sure that when they argue over which was the cruelest blow to humanity, this argument will be concerning the holocaust, the 9/11 disaster and the attempts at converting Mortal Kombat into a movie franchise.

That said, it looks like fate has swung around one more time to take a fresh dump on anyone who ever enjoyed the game in it's purest form. It is reported that Threshold (who hold the rights to the game) are looking to reinvent the series not unlike the way that Christopher Nolan did with BATMAN BEGINS. The director of the film, mink (INTO THE SUN) has apparently been fielding questions about the direction of the upcoming movie on the boards at Imdb.com. Hopefully this time we'll get something good, rather than... well... what we got last time.

Extra Tidbit: Jean Claude Van Damme apparently turned down the role of Johnny Cage in the original MORTAL KOMBAT to play Guile in STREET FIGHTER. He must have felt like Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE.

It was mindlessly dumb fun, but fun none the less.

As for another one? Sure, why not. Can’t be any worse then the second one.

To be fair, the first Kombat was pretty good. Not anything great, but still decent. The second one was a travesty, and the series sucked, but the first movie....yeah, it was good. This new one....I don't know, we'll see.

Also, I enjoy Street Fighter the movie. Not cause it's a great movie -- cause it's not -- but just because it's fun to watch.

ADD = Wow, just read some of the other comments...apparently the minority of people who loved the first movie isn't as small as I thought. Cheers, mates.

i'm a HUGE fan of the mortal kombat games especialy MK2 but producers should stop focusing on the "kombat" and read what happened before the tournament for example the raiden v.s. shinnok wars (those were so powerfull it destroyed a planet!!) the huge lord of the rings like wars between the shokan (goro) and the centaurs (motaro) or even shao khan taking over edenia... with a huge war (THAT'S A F***ING MOVIE), ironically the story of the whole MK universe is much more interesting than the kombats themselves.

It's kind of foolish to make a "Mortal Kombat" movie and not just be as brutal and violent as the games itself. Could be fun if pulled off right.

I guess I'm in the minority of thinking that the original MK movie f*cking rocked, and that "Annihilation" was one of the worst sequels ever made. That being said, I'd much prefer a decent DVD release of the first film to any sequel or "re-imagining" by a guy named after a small furry animal (that's not a wolverine). Of course, if said animal guy actually did make another MK film, there would probably be a Special Edition release of the film two movies, anyway. So I guess it's a win-win situation. Unless the new movie blows, in which case it's just a win-lose. Okay, I'll shut up now.

Not to sound like an ass, but... the director, "mink," is a tool. I saw some of his conversations with people awhile ago, and even though he sounds like a decent guy, he also sounds like an idiot.

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure the reason he goes by that awful nickname (I have a lame nickname, but it's not like I'm using it as a director's handle or anything) is because his mom is somebody famous with a ton of cash. He didn't want people associating his "success" with her. I don't know if what I heard is the absolutely truth, but it sounds pretty believable. He doesn't seem talented enough to be given the opportunity to direct a film like this.

I mean, all he's made are two godawful movies - one is a gangster/rapper flick called Full Clip (with a 2.7 rating on IMDB), and the other's a Steven Seagal movie called Into the Sun (as was mentioned in the article).

I never watched "Annihilation," but I guess the original was about as good as you could make a movie based on a game surrounding characters who just fight each other. I mean, it's a weak source material. I really don't see how they could rehabilitate it. At least Batman has depth to begin with.

There's a video floating around youtube which is under the title of something like "Mortal Peep Fight" which rocks way harder than either of the movies made about this game.

I'm surprised that they'd be trying to make another since most people just don't play (or remember) it anymore.
