Strike Back below!
by: Daniel Barna Aug. 29, 2008

I've always wanted to be a rock star, but unfortunately musical talent, stage presence and overall confidence continue to elude me. To be a rock star you have to assume a god-like presence, inspire millions and probably perhaps carry a tune or two. It's the stuff tailor-made for the big screen, as demonstrated by the success and subsequent cult statuses of the Ray, Johnny and Jim biopics that have graced our cinemas over the years. It's curious then, that the most celebrated and legendary of all rock stars, that guy who wrote that song about a Yellow Submarine, has not yet received the proper Hollywood treatment.

Thankfully, U.K. production house Ecosse Films has enlisted visual artist Sam Taylor-Wood to direct, and CONTROL screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh to write a film called NOWHERE BOY, about the early childhood and subsequent journey to icon status of one John Lennon. That's right. The life and times of our favorite Beatle (sorry Ringo) is finally coming to a theatre near you. The daunting task of casting the most mythical man in music history is currently underway.

Extra Tidbit: This story obviously begs the question: Who should play John Lennon?

Paul Dano as John Lennon
I believe Paul Dano could do the part justice. He's A good actor. Look at his performances in There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine.

I think the casting director should at least consider him.

Never liked The Beatles, and for the record Chapter 27 was a let down.

Gotta agree with rubox, i've always wanted to see a biopic of my favorite band of all-time. I'd go for 2 movies though, part 1: early years to the height of fame; part 2: later years and break-up of the band.

I actually think James McAvoy could pull off the role quite well, at least for the younger years.

Ryan Gosling as Lennon
I just hope that this turns out to be a big film. I can't stand all the little independent/low budget/small release Beatle films. They are the biggest band of all-time and deserve a full blown, kick ass bio-pic. Please get it right this time. Do we have to get Michael Bay on the case? LOL!

Beatles: The Trilogy
Now what I would love to see (per one of the come on hollywood headlines) is a Beatles biopic. Do it as a trilogy...movie one-the early moptop years...movie 2 - psychadelic years...movie 3 - the later years of the break-up and reunion of the 3 around the mid 90's. Think this would be a great movie being that they are one of the most influential rock bands ever.

If this happens, I'd say Ian Hart. He was a great young John Lennon in Backbeat, so he should be perfect for the role now. As always, it depends on the script.

At least it's a British company behind otherwise Hollywood would have changed the end and John would have lived. I don't know who could play him, why try to find some new talent, big stars take away from the awe of the person the movie is being made about.

Curious choice of a director
You'd think for what's certain to be such a high profile project they would've picked someone with a bit more experience, some modern (and of course British) legend like Stephen Frears or Mike Leigh or Richard Eyre. You know, someone that was actually alive during the era.

As for a potential star I like unitedvisions idea of Ewan McGregor, the guy's talented (and in my opinion seriously underrated) and can sing. About the right age too.

It has to be someone with the kind of commitment to the project where he gets lost in the role.

My vote goes to David Thewlis. He's British, which is always a plus when it comes to Grade A thespians. Plus, I think he could pull off the Lennon look.

This project's pretty damn late if you ask me...I think if it were 30 years ago Dustin Hoffman could've pulled it off...

It's obvious why there's been no Lennon, or any type of Beatle for that matter, movie made yet. How can you encompass what they accomplished and did in one film? How can you do it justice?

Though he may be too old and it's cliche to say, how about Britain's own Daniel-Day?

My Vote...
Paul Rudd. Case Closed. But seriously?

It's too bad Russel Crowe is too old now, because this would have been great. Yeah I know he's a little violent in real life, but the man can work wonders on screen.

My real, actual vote is for Ewan McGregor. You need someone in their early 30's to be able to play a little younger and a little older. That's Ewan, and with make-up and hair + glasses he would look the part.

He can sing too, but you should really use Lennon's voice. Another pic would be Heath Ledger, but sadly... well you know the rest.

And if anyone suggests Johnny Depp I'm going to start throwing punches.
