After crushing New York with the unnamed monster of CLOVERFIELD, director Matt Reeves is scaling it down for LET ME IN, an Americanization of the outstanding Swedish vampire movie/novel LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.

The remake from Overture and the reincarnated Hammer Films is now underway in Albuquerque, New Mexico (with the setting itself apparently shifted from the originally planned wintry Colorado). The story follows a young outcast who falls for his new neighbor, an unusual but captivating girl who turns out to be a vampire.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (THE ROAD) and Chloe Moretz ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER) play the leads Owen and Abby (formerly Oskar and Eli), with Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR, "Six Feet Under") playing the young girl's guardian.

New names on the cast list include Elias Koteas as the policeman, Cara Buono (“The Sopranos”) as Owen’s mother and Sasha Barrese (THE HANGOVER) as Virginia.

The press release also includes the following statements:

The filmmakers note that while the new film will pay respect to the original Swedish version, they intend to forge a unique identity for LET ME IN, placing it firmly in an American context. "This project is very personal to Matt as it is to the many passionate fans of the original story," said Simon Oakes, President and CEO of Hammer Films. "The brilliance of that story deserves to be seen by audiences on a wide scale and we are excited that the pieces are in place to make that a reality."

Extra Tidbit: Albuquerque: the Hollywood of New Mexico.

I, for one, thought the original was pretty average and am eager to see how this version of the film turns out.

I think there are far worse people and actors that could be attached to this project. I also really think the IDEA behind the original was very compelling, just didn't think the movie itself was.

I also think that some of you should really lighten up, it's just a movie and your precious original will still be around for you to enjoy.

I don't like the idea of remaking a movie that's barely a year old, but I'm interested in seeing what they do with a new setting. Putting this story in the desert just sounds like an awesome way to Americanize it.

I was not sure what to make of news of this remake. But seeing as how Reeves is casting people for their talent and not focusing on star power is a good sign that this remake may be in capable hands. Jenkins, Koteas, Buono, and Barrese are all accomplished character actors and I think they'll be great as well in this.

I want to give this a Hip rating just for the casting of Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas (and Chloe Moretz, for that matter), not to mention the claim that Reeves wants to make this a worthy transplant.

Alas, some things are difficult to imagine. "Let the Right One In" gave a new and welcome spin to the vampire legend, exploring ideas I hadn't thought of before. But it sounds like they are on the right track with this one. So, fingers crossed.

Then why don't they go to a goddamn video store? I'm hoping beyond hope that they don't ruin this, but them trying to justify it like that really irks me.
