Marks on Super Max Aug. 15, 2008
Source: MTV
by: Omar Aviles

Green Arrow & Black Canary Red hot scribe Justin Marks was feeling a little chatty recently so he decided to talk to MTV about his Green Arrow film, SUPER MAX (or whatever the hell it's called now). It's been reported that since the film takes place in a prison for super villains, we'd be seeing a myriad of known and not so known comic characters but according to Marks, we'll also be seeing some extremely well known comic characters like Lex Luthor, Edward Nigma aka The Riddler and The Joker. As for the prison itself, Marks had this to say: It's a very, very awesome prison. I majored in architecture in college, and design is how I actually started in. For 'Super Max,' designing that prison, it had to be the kind of thing that was a character in and of itself. We're in a world where instead of just trying to contain a guy who's really big, you're trying to contain a guy who can — in the case of Icicle — who can freeze things. What kind of a cell would a guy like that need in order to have his powers neutralized? So to escape from Super Max they have got to go through the most elaborate heist we've ever seen, involving superpowers. Because the prison itself kind of has superpowers!" As for Black Canary, Green Arrow's wife, who's been a part of the Arrow mythology for quite a while? She's not in it.

Extra Tidbit: Green Arrow first appeared in "More Fun Comics" #73 in 1941.

Thanks for the insight Wombat. Sounds pretty entertaining. If GA just throws out one liners thats kinda shitty, even though he is a smart ass. But they need to give him some heart and soul, they've done it before, in order for this to work.

JUSTIN MARKS - AGE?
I've been hearing his name seemingly attached to every other project these days.

Anybody know how old he is?

THE BIGGER VILLAINS
Oh, and don't bitch about there being bigger villains in the movie. When they say The Joker, Lex Luthor, and The Riddler are there, its just a quick mention. None of the characters actually appear in the script. Oliver Queen walks by a sealed off cell marked "2714: Joker" at one point and

SPOILERS
when he's put in isolation, Oliver Queen sees all sorts of carvings on the wall from people that had been there before. One reads E. Nigma. Also, Lex Luthor is mentioned in passing. There are three different types of criminals Green Jumpsuits are regular humans that are just extremely dangerous, Orange is for metahumans, and Blue are for evil geniuses. Split tells Queen that Lex Luthor is around the recreation yard somewhere, but you never see him. They keep the evil geniuses drugged with something that makes them have the intelligence of a pre-schooler.

SPOILERS END

But yeah, so there aren't any real BIG villains in the movie, just lots of little homages.

In the hands of a capable director, and with a few changes to the script, it could be a real fun Summer blockbuster. As it stands right now, Green Arrow only throws one-liners, and the whole prison break story feels hackneyed in the way it's portrayed (one aspect of the Prison BLATANTLY rips off "Cube"). The basic story is pretty good though, so a few changes could make this VERY interesting.

THE SCRIPT
I've read the script for this twice over. It's a pretty entertaining read with a lot of little intense moments, but as a whole, it felt like it was lacking a lot of heart for any of the characters. It should make for a cool movie, but nothing TOO spectacular. I'm just curious what the budget will be like on this thing, since the script I read for it seemed like it would be expensive as fuck to produce, and I don't know how viable Green Arrow is as a bankable character.

Yeah, because Arkham does such a great job of sustaining villains in the DCU. You do realize how many times a main villain has escaped that place, or has been let go because they are "Better". Dude, Joker needs a prison like this. I dont care about the riddler, but yeah.

I'd love to see this. A normal guy trying to escape from a Prison that is meant to hold villains with Superpowers. Awesome Idea. It would work with Batman also, maybe even a little better. Have Bruce Wayne go t prison. SWEET.

Also, Green Arrown is an awesome character, you just need to read the right story. "The Long Bow Hunter" is the best one IMO. The one Kevin Smith did (don't remember, might be the one where Conner takes over) is also pretty sweet.

But, one of the coolest was when Green Arrow and Green Lantern teamed up. Amazing.

I agree, A Green Lantern movie would the absolute shits. What I want is both though AND a Martian Manhunter movie. Then do a Justice league Beginnings type story where it focuses just on these three (sorry, put in a aquaman line as to where he is, cuz he AINT in my vision) And then Bale and Routh have cameos, where they join much later and help them in the main fight at the end, whoever it's against. Then the sequel can have all five and then introduce Wonder Woman and Flash. Then the third one is all seven and Aquaman makes an appearance. Ease us into it and save the least important characters for the last film and the most important ones start off with.

BAH!
I always thought that Green Arrow was a bit weak in the masculinity department. Not one of my top favorite DC heroes. I rather see a Green Lantern flick!

No way. I thought this was suppose to be with lesser known villains not the most popular. Dark Knight just did the Joker and they might be planning on putting the Riddler in the 3rd one. Besides, Riddler and the Joker don't go to prisons, they go to Arkham.
