Mel Gibson returns! Apr. 29, 2008
Source: Variety
by: Mike Sampson

Mel Gibson has signed on to star in his first film since 2002's SIGNS and WE WERE SOLDIERS with the upcoming thriller EDGE OF DARKNESS. Gibson will star in the film as a police investigator whose daughter is killed. As he investigates, he begins to have visions of his daughter while uncovering cover-ups and espionage. The film is based on the 1985 BBC miniseries of the same name with William Monahan (THE DEPARTED) adapting the script. Martin Campbell (CASINO ROYALE) will direct the film, which hasn't been set up at a studio yet. Though Gibson has come close to starring in films in the past six years (most notably UNDER AND ALONE for Antoine Fuqua), this is the first time he's actually taken the plunge. Variety posts an interesting stat that Mel Gibson films have grossed over $5 billion worldwide so it will be interesting to see if he still has that drawing power after his many controversies. Filming on DARKNESS is expected to begin this August in Boston.

Extra Tidbit: Gibson actually won Time's "Man of the Year" honor in 2004 but turned it down.

I think Gibson's great! I wouldn't mind seeing a new movie with him in it.
Don't give a shit about his personal views. Especially since he was drunk when he said them!

The fact is that Gibson is a great actor and a very talented filmmaker. If he has some old ideas in his head thanks to his dad, well, Tom Cruise believes in Xenu, Marion Cotillard thinks 9/11 was a conspiracy, and it's likely that Walt Disney was much more anti-Semitic than Gibson ever was. Stars are f---ing crazy, we just have to deal with that.

Fuckin A! Mel Gibson owns on so many levels! He hit a blip in the road, but who hasn't blamed all of the wars in the world on the jews, i mean lets be honest here!!

Hopefully we can get a Lethal Weapon 5.. cuz i would fuckin LOVE that!

WORD
I'm really excited to see Mel acting again like everyone else, but the description of the film kind of has me turned off. He starts to have visions of his daughter? I don't know, I don't like that sound of that but who am I but a mere lad. Nonetheless I will still see this piece of cinema.

THAT'S WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT
Mel Gibson a true actor, artist and an true director of all time. He is coming back I will go to church and thank god for it. I have so much respect for this guy. Controversies?... media publicize the controversy and make it a big deal while its just nothing. Mel is a true genius and an awesome human being. He will make big bucks, trust me on that.

Welcome Back, Mel Gibson. I cannot wait.
