Sam Mendes has signed on to direct an upcoming comedy from Dave Eggers with John Krasinski ("The Office") and Maya Rudolph ("Saturday Night Live") attached to star. The project would be Mendes' first foray into comedy after directing dramas like AMERICAN BEAUTY and ROAD TO PERDITION. Eggers co-wrote his first original script with his wife Vendela Vida and it follows a newlywed couple traveling the US looking for the perfect place to raise their baby. Mendes recently wrapping filming on REVOLUTIONARY ROAD with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet starring. The Eggers comedy was originally titled THIS MUST BE THE PLACE but is now operating sans title. Eggers previously co-wrote WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE with Spike Jonze and is also working on a screenplay based on his novel "What Is The What." Filming on the Mendes comedy is expected to begin in March for Focus Features. Krasinski can be seen next in the George Clooney comedy LEATHERHEADS while Rudolph had taken time off acting to raise her first child with husband Paul Thomas Anderson.

Extra Tidbit: Rudolph was a member of the alt-punk band The Rentals who scored a hit in the late-90s with "Friends of P."

I have nothing against Mendes going for a comedy, but I would expect something that sounds much cooler or special than a comedy that Martin Lawrence or Steve Martin would do
Anyways, if it helps Krasisnki's career, than its all good

actually, Lord of the Rings had very few big names anywhere in the production.

This sounds great though. I have yet to see American Beauty but I love Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road looks great...

This sounds great though. I have yet to see American Beauty but I love Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road looks great. And it has John Krasinski who I like mainly because of The Office. So, I'll be looking forward ot this.

I really really like the combination of talent coming together on this project. Many times, it seems like studios just go with the "bigger is better" approach and think if they get the best of everything (actors, director, screenwriter, etc.) and throw a bunch of money at a project, that it will yield a profitable piece of classic cinema. Of course, sometimes you end up with Lord of the Rings (although I'm a little hesitant to call it a full-on classic, despite it being deemed our generation's "Star Wars"), but sometimes you end up with Heaven's Gate (probably not as terrible as it was made out to be, but certainly a disaster on many levels). I have a good feeling this may be one of those situations where the talent is pretty impeccable on every level, but will actually end up flowing together to create a memorable experience. Here's hoping...
