After resuscitating the career of Robert Downey, Jr., the IRON MAN franchise is looking to do the same with another former down-and-out star. Mickey Rourke is in talks to star as the lead villain in IRON MAN 2 for director Jon Favreau. While no in involved with the production would confirm it, Variety is reporting that Rourke's villain would be Crimson Dynamo. There are too many Crimson Dymano's to count but the general theme will be that Rourke will play a Russian equivalent of Tony Stark who builds himself a nuclear-powered suit.

Also in talks to join IRON MAN is Sam Rockwell, who will also be playing a villain in the film (though the identity of the secondary villain is unclear). Justin Theroux (TROPIC THUNDER) is currently working on the script with Jon Favreau. Already set for the film are Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle who stepped in to replace the departed Terrence Howard. I don't know about you but this pretty much makes IRON MAN 2 even more of a must-see than it already was.

UPDATE - The plot thickens... The Hollywood Reporter is chiming in saying that Rourke isn't playing a Russian Crimson Dynamo at all, that he'll instead be Whiplash, a former Stark Industries engineer who develops two cybernetically controlled whips. They also add that Sam Rockwell will be playing Justin Hammer, a rival of Tony Stark's who steps in to sell weapons as Stark (at the end of IRON MAN) backs out of that business. So who's got the right story? Stay tuned as it develops...

As previously stated, there have been numerous Crimson Dynamos throughout the years so continuity shouldn't be a problem. And from the description, it doesn't sound like any Dynamo we've ever seen. He's buff and decked out in tats (so he's kinda like Mickey Rourke...). This is how his powers are described on the Wikipedia page:

The Crimson Dynamo wears an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit's outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight. Subsequent versions of the battle-suit have featured upgrades of various kinds, by the Gremlin and other Russian scientists. As Crimson Dynamo, Valentin Shatalov's version of the armor was equipped with a powerful chest-mounted fusion-caster weapon.

Extra Tidbit: So who exactly IS Sam Rockwell playing? And before you suggest Mandarin, Favreau has said not to expect him until the third film...

Nice good casting for either villain. It would be crazy to see them try and pull off whiplash.
As for Sam Rockwell, it would be cool if he was Hawkeye whose been rumored to be in this.

Don't care who he plays
Just get Sam Rockwell in this film. He's never bad in any movie.

Hitchikers' Guide, The Green Mile and Welcome To Collingwood would not be the same without him.

I dig Rourke, but...
the perspective of hearing Mickey pull off another phony accent (A Prayer for the Dying, remember?) doesn't sit well with me.

And albeit I totally respect those who genuinely liked Favreau's "film"; for the life of me I can't get how some people see anything other than a shallow action-comedy with zero integrity. Website peeps were so enamored with Favreau's fanboyism that they ...

And albeit I totally respect those who genuinely liked Favreau's "film"; for the life of me I can't get how some people see anything other than a shallow action-comedy with zero integrity. Website peeps were so enamored with Favreau's fanboyism that they completely forgot to apply him the kind of critical pattern they give to others, or just do their jobs and expose his BS. If Brett Ratner (same level of odourless filmmaking, only less sly with the internet people) churned out the same flick, he'd be given a beating. But Favreau spent so much time buttering us up with a mouthful of genre names (citing RoboCop's political aspects, the scope of Raiders of the lost ark, Batman Begins' serious nature, from the Children of Men writers to boot!) that everyone got giddy. Guess what? Nothing in these so-called influences transpired in the final product. And Alfonso Cuaron went on record to claim that these writers had nothing to do with his movie, only credited due to WGA regulations. It was just a big lowbrow RDJ show, and even if I like him I can't help but regret he followed Depp's footsteps by lending his name and talent to a lame blockbuster.

Relax.

The implication is that Robert Downey Jr. wasn't back on the A-list until IRON MAN was released, which is completely accurate.

It's the same with Mickey Rourke. He's back in the spotlight with THE WRESTLER, but until he stars in a high profile Hollywood film, he won’t be known to most of the world. It takes a big budget film to put you back on the A-...

And I think your opinion of IRON MAN isn't shared by many other people. So while you're entitled to it, don't bash the site.

This site sucks sometimes...
"After resuscitating the career of Robert Downey, Jr.".

[link] those guys anything to do with Pirates of the Carribean?), and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and Charlie Bartlett?

As for Mickey Rourke, have you heard about The wrestler? Have you seen him in Sin city, or Domino? Don't you think his role in The expendables could confirm his come-back before that useless sequel to a lame movie?

It would probably be a good idea if they changed his nationality to Chinese, considering they're actually communist, plus those asians are good at building robots.

Although this does remind me of Stane from the first iron man, I trust Fav's & Co. with this movie. Rourke is a good call, but I'd prefer to see him reprise Marv for Sin City 2 (if it ever gets made). Hopefully we'll be seeing war machine in this movie.

Seriously?
This sounds like the same bad guy as the first movie. No offense to Jeff Bridges, who did a great, subtle job for the first hour of the movie, but the climax was pretty lame. Bridges puts on a big suit, becomes suddenly crazy, and then proceeds to exchange cliches with Iron Man until one of them is left standing.

I was hoping for an entirely new direction with the sequel. Someone told me Tony Start became depressed, regressed back into alcoholism, and quit being a hero for while in the comics. That sounds like better material for a sequel than rehashing the worst part of the first movie.

WOW THIS SUCKS
Yea great casting and it would be cool but....this is exactly like the first Iron Man I'd like more of a variety in villains plus the climax fight of the first movie was the film's weakest point. I just want some Cap or Thor casting to make up for this.

I'm glad they are going the TDK route and sekecting unlikely choices for this high profile sequel. This is shaping up to be an interesting cast.

I'm especially glad to see Sam Rockwell finally getting the kind of role he deserves. He was totally excellent in both Choke and Frost/Nixon, not to mention at least five other films of the past decade.

Holy Crap! And I thought the casting of Tim Robbins was great. This is an awesome news. Rourke is a good call for Crimson Dynamo; that armor suit is huge.

Rourke is the man . . .

I was already really lookin forward to this, now I cant wait!

He's done a lot of good work recently, and was good in the majority of films he was in before his self imposed exile. Im glad he's back :)

Superherohype stated that Sam Rockwell will be playing Justin Hammer, which is odd because Hammer is an elderly character. I reallllllly hope they're wrong and he ends up playing Hawkeye! Sam Rockwell's awesome and that would be such a badass casting decision.

i would like to see Justin Hammer in the story line....now or later. Maybe Rockwell could play Spymaster and steals the design for Justin Hammer...or for someone else...who knows....maybe just bring him into the story somehow stealing crucial information....or Rockwell could play controller. Those characters link up well together.

The Wrestler
Didn't The Wrestler already resuscitate Rourke's career? It would sure seem like it, since he sure appears to be getting more high profile offers (this and Stallone's The Expendables). I also like when villains serve as almost a mirror image of the hero (maybe not in appearance), so having the villain be a "Russian equivalent of Tony Stark" is a good choice, since Russia obviously has a history of competition with America and the reemergence of his past life in the form of another villain with a career like his old is perfect for personal tension (it implies Stark could have been a villain when he made weapons and it might lead him to a depression that results in his alcholism). This sounds good.

How can the Iron Man franchise resuscitate Mickey Rourke's career, when that was already done with Sin City? He's already winning award nominations for his role in The Wrestler, so his career has already been resuscitated.
