Mortensen is Poe? Nov. 14, 2007

This project seems to have been a million years in the making, but finally it looks like Stallone's Edgar Allan Poe project ('POE') might be making steps forward. It's being reported by Cinemablend today that the man Sly wants to play the tortured poet is none other than Viggo Mortensen. Apparently he's interested, but he wants a couple of script revisions. Hmm, can you see it? I guess I can, I haven't really loved anything he's done since he made a bazillion dollars slicing orks in half and bitching about not wanting the throne in the LORD OF THE RINGS movies. But I definitely think he's ready for a real serious role like this one. Robert Downey Jr.'s name was at one point attached, but that was a long, long time ago and he's probably contractually obliged to make ten more IRON MAN films at this point. Either way, take this story with a pinch of salt, since it is at this point unconfirmed rumor, and faux Stallone stories have been cropping up lately, particularly in reference to serious films.

Extra Tidbit: I'm a writer, but every time I hear the name Poe my first thought is of John Malkovich shouting at Nic Cage in CON AIR.

I remember back in the mid-90's when there were rumors of Michael Jackson taking the lead role.

Stallone ISNT a great writer director. He wrote Rocky, sure, but he also wrote the crappy sequels.

Poe was 26 when he married his 13-year-old cousin.

Stallone is a great writer/director. The guy fucking wrote ROCKY.

I'm not quite sure about Mortensen as Poe, though. While he is a great actor, he doesn't look like Poe, at all.

Dude, James...have you SEEN A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE or EASTERN PROMISES? The man OWNS the screen. He's incomparable.

This movie, if it gets done with him in it, could be seriously great.

Sly is DIRECTING, by the way, not producing, and it will be taken seriously because he has proven that he is an incredibly talented director (one of many talents the guy has).

I'm guessing this isn't the same project that the Scott brothers are going forward with...
In any case, Sly producing? Really? How is this ever going to be taken seriously?

Did u know Poe married his 13 year old cousin? haha i'm pretty sure thats correct, if not someone help me. But besides that, The Tell Tale Heart scared the SHIT outta me in middle school, and a few others. And Slys directing this? I didn't see that coming. And as for Mortensen starring as Poe thats fine its just, he doesn't realli look like the man. But i love the guy, History of Violence is one of my favs. and Eastern Promises rocked.

I can sure see it, and it's great that he is taking his time rather than jumping in at the deep end script wise.

James, I think you're forgetting about "History Of Violence" and "Eastern Promises" Mortensen is an incredible actor (at least when he's with Cronenberg), this could really work!

It's pretty much undisputed that Viggo is one of the best actors out there today and to see him as Poe would be blacktastic, but whenever I think of Poe all I can see is Jeffrey Combs.

After LOTR, I actually enjoyed Hidalgo and thought it was really underrated. But I'd say his best work so far after Rings has been A History of Violence.

Mortensen would be great in this role. Despite the authors opinion, Mortensen has given several strong performances since starring in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Two personal favorites, "Eastern Promises" and "A History of Violence" come to mind. While not block busters financially they were both incredible films featuring searing performances by Mortensen. Poe's life, as a writer, drug addict, and Baltimorean, has always been intriguing to me. I am looking forward to this.
