Director Paul W.S. Anderson gives an update on Resident Evil 6

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

A couple of months ago it sounded like the sixth and likely final (fingers crossed) RESIDENT EVIL movie was going to be titled RESIDENT EVIL: RISING, however in a new interview with Collider, director Paul W.S. Anderson says he is currently writing the script for the next film, and right now the working title is RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the working title. It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].

Paul W.S. Anderson goes on to say there isn't a production start date yet for RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER, and isn't sure when the sixth movie might hit theaters.

No, there are no set dates for shooting yet. I think we’re waiting until we have a first draft screenplay and then go from there..Depends how fast I write, I guess. There’s no set [release] date yet but hopefully we’ll have an announcement for that soon.

Paul W.S. Anderson also says RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER will probably be the last RESIDENT EVIL movie.

That’s what’s on the title page, it’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely.

Anderson didn't share any plot details for RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER, but did say he is already thinking about how the 3D will be used in the new movie.

I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process. You cannot make a great 3D movie by just—it’s not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on. You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top—it doesn’t work well like that. Yes, you can do a last minute conversion. You can not shoot the movie thinking about 3D and do a last minute conversion and it can be a 3D movie, it’s just not gonna be a great 3D movie. I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know—because I’ve done so much of it—will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about.

The sixth RESIDENT EVIL flick might be called "The Final Chapter," however the franchise has been very profitable, and I do wonder if this will actually be the last movie in the series. Even if it is, I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before Sony decides to reboot the franchise.

Although there's no release date for RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER, it will probably be in theaters sometime in 2015.
