Rumor: Elizabeth Olsen in contention for Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The folks over at Bleeding Cool are hearing from their source that Saoirse Ronan has passed on the role of Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch for Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and producers have moved on to their next choice, which comes in the form of OLDBOY actress Elizabeth Olsen. Here's what BC had to say:

"According to my sources, Saoirse Ronan has passed on the role of Wanda Maximoff, The Scarlet Witch, in The Avengers: Age of Ultron despite being, at some point or another, Joss Whedon‘s top pick for the role."

Apparantly, Olsen would have to "adopt a 'European' accent for the role," which is consistent with what Whedon has said about her and Quicksilver's European origins for the film. Olsen has been on the rise of late, making a slow roll through the genre and indie market with pics like SILENT HOUSE, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, LIBERAL ARTS, and the upcoming OLDBOY, not to mention next summer's tentpole, GODZILLA. It would seem that Olsen may well be on her way to superstardom if she can secure this "Marvelous" role. Either way, she should probably send a 'thank you' card to her agent.

So far, Scarlet Witch's brother, Quicksilver, is heavily rumored to be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with the actor all but confirming the role, while the same character is being played by Evan Peters in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Of course, the difference there is that the familial origins of the characters can be explored (i.e. being the children of Magneto), while in THE AVNEGERS: AGE OF ULTRON they'll need to be…obscured.

What do you think, is Elizabeth Olsen ready to be an Avenger?

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is scheduled for release on May 01, 2015.
