Updated: Bronze statue to be erected in due time to commemorate Robocop Day

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Update: Evidently the statue announcement was cancelled due to unforseen circumstances (with details on that coming in the near future), but the first pitch at Comerica Park will still take place, and the the first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Robocop poster as they enter the stadium with additional surprises throughout the evening. Below you’ll find the original article as written earlier today.

For those of you in the Detroit area, you’re in for a treat, as today has been declared ‘Robocop Day’, culminating in a bronze statue of the original 1987 Robocop model from Paul Verhoeven‘s film. Why is this even a thing? Well, it seems about three years ago, a non-profit organization (Imagination Station) wanted to build a statue for the city of Detroit. Given that Philadelphia has Rocky, makes sense, right?

That idea was initially shut down, in a tweet from Mayor Bing stating, “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.” Well, fast forward to now and while the new Robocop hits DVD/Blu-ray today, Detroit residents get all sorts of Robo-goodies. RoboCop Day will officially start with a statue dedication at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters, and end with Robocop throwing out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game.

Here’s the itinerary:

12:00 p.m. – Robocop and Detroit Police Department arrivals

12:10 p.m. – Robocop presentation and statue announcement

12:30 p.m. – 1 p.m. – Fan photo opportunities with Robocop

1 p.m. – Robocop and Detroit Police Department departure to protect the City of Detroit

7 p.m. – Robocop throws out the first pitch at Comerica Park

A permanent home for the Robocop statue has yet to be announced.
