Rumor: How big will Wonder Woman’s role be in Batman vs. Superman? Plus, a hint at her origin

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The folks at Batman-on-Film did a mailbag of Q&A a few days ago, answering some big questions with some interesting speculation. Certainly, none of this is official, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's no less interesting-and convincing at that. BOF addresses the role of Wonder Woman in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, as well as whether or not Jason Mamoa is on deck to play Martian Manhunter or Aquaman, the second villain rumor (potentially Doomsday), and lastly a very interesting and potentially infuriating look at the origin of Wonder Woman in the DC Cinematic Universe. Read on for details.

On Wonder Woman's role in the sequel:

Personally, I'd say it'll be about on par with Scarlett Johansson's first appearance as Black Widow in IRON MAN 2. I believe that it's a cameo-plus type of role that will (hopefully) serve as a springboard to a solo Wonder Woman movie.

With all that said, I'd bet a year's pay, in MONOPOLY money, of course, that the "Amazons" of this cinematic DCU will be descendants of those "ancient Kryptonians" who attempted to set up Kryptonian outposts throughout spacedom thousands and thousands of years ago. Furthermore, I say that Wonder Woman will be powered-down, if you will, relative to Superman because these Amazons have evolved and adapted to living on Earth for hundreds of centuries. And since Kryptonians are produced without any [traditional procreation] (Jor El and Lara excluded) couldn't this original Kryptonian on Earth have used this reproductive science to create an all-female race? I say yes!

On whether or not Jason Mamoa will play Martian Manhunter or Aquaman are in the film:

Nope and nope. Neither of those characters are in this film.

On whether or not Lex Luthor is in the film and the rumor of a second villain:

Yes. And sorry, I'm not at liberty to reveal the ID of the other villain at this time…but the character is highly rumored to be in the film.

Interesting stuff, as I said before, but this is mainly just good stuff for chatter as nothing is confirmed. Still, it does bring up some interesting ideas. There's a lot more at BOF, including their thoughts on when we might see Ben Affleck in costume as Batman ("REALLY SOON") and their belief that the two main villains of the film will be Superman villains only (Lex and Doomsday perhaps?) and that the film will indeed be a Superman film, focusing on Henry Cavill's Clark Kent/Superman with Batman and Wonder Woman being side characters with the idea of expanding them into their own films. No matter how you slice it, I think we're all just excited and curious to see this develop, so hit back with your thoughts below. While we've got a year and a half before we see this onscreen, there will be PLENTY of news to drop on the film in 2014.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN opens on July 17, 2015.
