How would you feel if Star Trek Into Darkness was Zachary Quinto’s last turn as Spock?

UPDATE: Quinto himself just posted this to his Twitter account: “simmer down kids. rumors are rumors for a reason. quotes out of context. let’s let the second movie come out before we talk about a third…”

I may just be reading too much into this, and I would hate to be a part of rumor-mongering, but I’ve always found journalism to reward the “better safe than sorry” approach. And so: in a recent interview with EW about his recent turns in “American Horror Story”, Zachary Quinto capped things off with a comment that seems it could very well imply that he intends for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS to be his last turn as Spock.

“While the Asylum experience has been rewarding, Quinto says he’s also ready to ‘go in a different direction’ with his career after Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters next summer. ‘It’s like an era of association with certain roles – a specific part like Spock, or a kind of part, like Sylar — is coming to an end,’ he says. ‘I think it’s safe to say this will be the last serial killer I’ll be playing for the foreseeable future.'”

I happened to absolutely love the first film in J.J. Abrams’ reboot series, plot holes/leaps of logic and all (and somewhat forgivable as they were due to the Writer’s Strike). While everyone is using THE AVENGERS as their template for team interaction these days, I would say that I think Abrams’ TREK absolutely nailed it first. And while STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will (obviously) voyage into darker territory, I imagine that camaraderie and fun and adventure will still be there. The crew will still be together. But is that about to change? Will we get a third film, or would Quinto’s potential absence preclude that? Would you even want one?
