J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness to be released two days early in IMAX 3D; tickets available from app

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The long-teased STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS app was released during the Super Bowl yesterday and unlocked the news that the film would be getting an early release in its IMAX 3D format, bumping up from May 17th to May 15th.  The free app, which can be downloaded via iTunes or Google Play, also allows fans to purchase tickets for those initial screenings.  So, if you’re looking to get the jump, better download the app, and secure your tickets right away.  So, what’s the motive for the early screenings?

“As we saw with the reaction to the first nine minutes of the film, which debuted in our theatres in December, fans are clearly excited by the opportunity to see this epic film come to life in IMAX,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to work with our long-standing partners at Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures to offer audiences an opportunity to see J.J. Abrams‘ masterful interpretation two days early in the world’s most immersive format – IMAX 3D.”

Yesterday’s Super Bowl spot was a welcome surprise as it featured tons of new footage and made Benedict Cumberbatch, the cryptic villain of the film, seem ever more villainous, and gave us some signature STAR TREK cues throughout as well as the general feeling that the stakes are much higher than the previous film.  Here’s another look at the spot with some screencaps to take a closer look at the action.

Shall we begin?:

And here’s the screencaps:

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller will hit IMAX 3D starting on May 15, 2013 and everywhere else on May 17, 2013.
