Legendary Pictures to sit down with Guillermo Del Toro about Pacific Rim 2

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Even before PACIFIC RIM was released last summer there were talks about a sequel, however it's been a while since we've had an update on what's going on with PACIFIC RIM 2. Guillermo Del Toro has previously said he'd like to do another movie and has shared a few ideas for a sequel, but is Legendary Pictures still interested in making PACIFIC RIM 2?

In a recent interview with Collider on the studio's new GODZILLA movie, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull was asked about the status of PACIFIC RIM 2.

"We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek- so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it."

Although PACIFIC RIM may have done more business than the movies listed above, I think it's fair to say the film still underperformed, at least in domestic theaters. And while some are huge fans of PACIFIC RIM, I know there are plenty of you who really disliked Guillermo Del Toro's last movie.

The bigger issue I see with PACIFIC RIM 2 actually happening though is Del Toro. He's a very busy dude, but he also is kind of a project collector, and while he might be interested in doing a sequel, who knows when it might happen. Maybe Del Toro can stay on as an executive director, and then he can pick who he wants to helm PACIFIC RIM 2. But before we get too excited about more Kaiju and Jaeger battles, we should probably wait and see how their conversation on PACIFIC RIM 2 goes first.
