Max Martini says Pacific Rim 2 could be a prequel with more about Herc’s family history

Actor Max Martini has been crowned "Badass of the Year" by Empire, and while talking to the magazine, he was asked about a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM. Martini is contracted for another film, and he says he isn't sure if a second film will be a sequel or a prequel (if it gets made), but if it's the later, thinks it'll have a bit more about Herc's family history.

It's funny, I fell in love with this character. The key component was this relationship I had with my son, exploring the dysfunction and the loss, so where does Herc go from here? I don't know. It'll be interesting to see where Guillermo (del Toro) and Travis Beacham take it. I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel, but if it's a prequel you'll learn more about Herc's family history. But Guillermo has such a vivid imagination, it could go anywhere.

Herc and his son Chuck (Robert Kazinsky) were probably my favorite characters in the film, and if there is going to be a second movie, I'd love to see more about their family. However, there's no guarantee another film will happen. Although it did over $400 million worldwide, only $102 million of its gross came from domestic theaters. Guillermo Del Toro did say in October that he's working on the script for a sequel, and has previously made comments about his plans for future films.

But nothing has been greenlit yet, and Del Toro is going to be pretty busy with some of his upcoming projects. I wouldn't say a movie prequel or sequel to PACIFIC RIM is dead, but if another film does get approved, it'll probably be a while before it ends up in theaters.

Max Martini can be seen next in David Ayers' SABOTAGE with Arnold Schwarzenegger on April 11th, 2014, and he'll also be appearing in the film adaptation for FIFTY SHADES OF GREY.
