Stephen Sommers’ languishing Odd Thomas starring Anton Yelchin to be released in 2014

After some legal tug of war it appears that the languishing in limbo fantasy crime thriller ODD THOMAS from director Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY) is finally going to grace the big (or small) screen. Image Entertainment has acquired the film for release sometime in the first quarter of 2014 (no specific date is set as of yet).

“Director Stephen Sommers’s spectacular style and extraordinary vision translates so well to the big screen for this material,” said Bill Bromiley, Chief Acquisitions Officer for Image Entertainment.  “We are proud to distribute the film and introduce the magical world of Odd Thomas to a wider audience.

Here's the synopsis:

Odd Thomas (Yelchin) tells the story of a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities.Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice and he finds himself helping police solve a crime. Occasionally, they prevent one.

One day, however, a mysterious man comes to town with a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world’s worst killers and a pack of hyena-like shades that follow him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. What happens next is a mysterious battle between light and darkness.

I'm not sure what to make of ODD THOMAS. The sales trailer (above) makes it look like a strange, but fun flick with Anton Yelchin being a big sell, especially after coming into the spotlight after turns in STAR TREK and TERMINATOR: SALVATION. Sommers is hit or miss (but always cheesy) and ODD THOMAS seems to lean towards his familiar tastes, which can often divide audiences. Still, this looks a hell of a lot better than G.I.JOE: RISE OF COBRA.

ODD THOMAS will see release sometime in 2014. Will you be checking it out?
