WTF news: Gamer 3D to be released on blu-ray 3D this May

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

So, remember that silly little actioner starring Gerard Butler where he was a human avatar for a bratty videogame jockey in a fight-to-the-death TV show?  Yep, that’s GAMER, the 2009 Nevaldine/Taylor (CRANK) directed sci-fi action flick starring Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgewick, Amber Valetta, Logan Lerman, Alison Lohman, Terry Crews, and Ludacris.  It was a box-office flop, but has since gained a mild cult following, but not big enough to justify this whopper of news.

Apparently, GAMER is getting the 3D treatment, specifically for blu-ray and digital download this May.  Yessir, you heard me right and no I’m not making this up.  Now, I have to confess, I kind of dig GAMER for what it is; a silly, stupid, explosive, whacked-out action flick that makes for great home video viewing.  So, perhaps there’s some allure there, as it plays great at home, but the theatrical experience leaves you feeling chumped (as I felt after seeing THE LAST STAND and BULLET TO THE HEAD recently. Definitely should’ve waited til video).

Now, before you unleash hell on me for having the, ahem, Unpopular Opinion, I ask you to envision the below scene in 3D.

Aaaand, we’re back.  Look, GAMER was never going to take home golden statues, but at the very least it’s an amusing jolt to the system and could easily make for a fun “drinking game” movie.  If I had a 3D TV, I will admit that at some point you would catch me watching GAMER 3D.  I would be ashamed and proud, all at once.

Here’s the synopsis, in case you forgot:

Butler stars as Kable, condemned criminal and globally famous super-soldier in the ultimate multi-player game, “Slayers.” Human controllers direct each thought and move of real-life prison inmates battling in hyper-intense environments – where the goal is freedom and the penalty is death. But when Kable suddenly decides he wants out, his rebellion threatens the twisted plans of game creator Ken Castle (Hall), who will stop at nothing to crush the renegade commando in this taut, adrenaline-packed action-thriller.

GAMER 3D hits blu-ray, digital download, and On Demand on May 7, 2013.
