007 needs director

01.31.2007
James Bond will require someone other than M to give him mission directives next time around -- Martin Campbell, who has already defibrillated the 007 franchise twice, will apparently not be returning to the director's chair for BOND 22 (catchy title and theme song TBA).

While visiting China to promote CASINO ROYALE, Campbell stated it was "highly unlikely" he would return to the character once more (he also directed Pierce Brosnan's initial 007 entry GOLDENEYE). No reason was given, but let's hope it's not because he's too busy preparing VERTICAL LIMIT 2.

Cameras aren't set to roll on Daniel Craig's next installment as the suave superspy until NEXT January, so the film still has sufficient time to find someone suitable for the director position. And a script.
Extra Tidbit: Campbell also directed the rather decent made-for-HBO movie CAST A DEADLY SPELL, which featured Fred Ward as private eye Harry P. Lovecraft in an alternate 1940s filled with black magic. The movie is still unavailable on DVD. Curses!

Screw Bond, I'm more keen about a Campbell movie with Fred Ward, as Lovecraft, in a detective noir flick with black magic.

Hell yeah! Vertical Limit 2! Make sure hottie Robin Tunney is signed up again, though :)

Somethin tells me that they won't be inviting Lee Tamahori back...

*waits for the inevitable internet rumour that Quentin Tarantino will be attached to direct.*

Keep Campbell!

CR is my favorite 007 movie and I loved GE as well. He needs to stay, especially since Bond 22 will be a direct sequel and will need to keep the same tone.

Damn

If I were on of the producers, I'd strap him down and never let him go. They likely won't be going with anyone edgy or new, so why not go with what works? People groaned when Campbell came back. Now I think a little bit of crow eating is in order.

Some options

Campbell best movies are Bond movies (he's Zorro sucks), but he's not irreplaceable.

- Christian Duguay (director of the very underrated "The Assignment:)

- Kathryn Bigelow (a woman directing Bond would be interesting, specially if she has also done: Near Dark, Point Break, and Strange Days)

- Alex Proyas
- Guillermo del Toro
- Alfonso Cuaron (the man can do anything, and do it great)

I loved Campbell's Bond movies, so this is a bit of a disappointment to me :(

And, btw, Cast a Deadly Spell, while being a fun movie, will forever go down in my books as being on of the reasons it's hard to convince people that H.P. Lovecraft is the true master of modern horror.

In any case

What Mr. Campbell has done will certainly never be forgotten. With Goldeneye, and more notably with Casino Royale, which was dare I say a "great" Bond movie. And those words don't end up in one sentence too often, especially after the crap fest that was Die Another Day.

You have my respect sir, amazing job.
