DVD Cool News #120

The Latest Announcements

Riddick Trilogy - May 30

It's been a pretty slow couple of weeks for DVD releases, but coolness sometimes represents itself in the form of green beer, greener buds and this two-disc "Franchise Collection" for the Riddick Trilogy. The discs will feature Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, and the animated Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and will most likely be identical to the ones already available. We'll let you know if that changes, laddies. Some of the extras on those discs included audio commentaries, making of featurettes and deleted scenes.

Hollow Man 2 - May 23

Yeah, who knew. And who knew that this is the kind of vehicle Christian Slater has been driving lately. Pretty soon he'll be reduced to a stand in for Jack Nicholoson, or supplying the voice for The Jack Nicholson Show's animated feature. Or whatever. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and English Dolby Digital 5.1, the direct to DVD disc will include deleted scenes, and visual effects featurettes and retail for $24.96. And no, that price is not a misprint.

The Dirty Dozen (SE) - May 23

I always like to think of my old college's women's volleyball team as "The Dirty Dozen". Yowza Yowza indeed! Those girls can drink you under the table and then beat you with it. Having nothing to do with volleyball or college (or women for that matter), the Special Edition many have been looking for will be released with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer and include an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. The rest of the specs can be found below.

  • Commentary by cast members Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, Stuart Cooper and Colin Maitland, the producer Kenneth Hyman, original novelist E.M. Nathanson, film historian David J. Schow and the veteran military advisor to movies Capt. Dale Dye
  • Introduction by Ernest "Mermaid Man" Borgine
  • Bonus movie (The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission - the 1985 sequel with Lee Marvin)
  • Armed and Deadly: The Making of The Dirty Dozen documentary

  • A vintage 'Operation Dirty Dozen' featurette

Garfield (SE) - June 6

Why God Why? That's pretty much all I have to say. I pray that Jim Law doesn't see this cuz he's liable to start burning down stores with any type of Garfield merchandise and killing any cat that looks remotely like Garfield. Kidding! He's not that bad of a guy, he'll just skin it.

  • 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1 track
  • Audio commentary by director Peter Hewitt and John Davis
  • Garfield Movie Inside Look featurette
  • Two interactive games entitled Find Odie Maze Game and Mixing Moments
  • Deleted scenes reel
  • Garfield Bringing The Cat To Life featurette

You really think your lame ass kid's going to watch all that shit? Doubtful.

London - May 23

If you look really close at the cover, you can see how bummed out Jason Statham is by having hair. It's cool, Bacon, you're still Aces in our book, bro. For those not in the know, London is about a dude that finds out his ex-girlfriend (Jessica Biel) is leaving town without telling him (like she needs to?) and the dude crashes her party (score! That'll keep her around!) Here's my favorite part, "...rather than confront her, he holes up in the bathroom with a pile of cocaine and Bateman (Jason Statham), an enigmatic Englishman he barely knows." Then he tries to convince her to stay. Okay, guy, sure. 1...she's your EX-girlfriend. You obviously f'ked things up....2....YOU CRASHED HER PARTY like some goon! 3...She's Jessica freakin' Biel! She hates you. Now get back to your coked out conversation about outer space in the bathroom with Jason Statham. Nerd.

  • Anamorphic Widescreen
