Philip Seymour Kaufman?

08.11.2006

Normally I wouldn't put much stock in anything TMZ says or does because, frankly, I'm a little freaked out by their stalkerazzi tactics. I find it pretty sick that all they do is put some dude with a camera outside every single club in LA, goad them incessently with retarded comments and wait for the fireworks to fly. But they broke the big Mel Gibson story so we've got to thank them for that. Anywho, TMZ is reporting today that Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed on to star in the directorial debut of Oscar-winning writer Charlie Kaufman (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND). Kaufman's script is called SYNECDOCHE, which is already confusing and you haven't even gotten past the title page. The word means using a part to describe a whole (kinda like calling a car "wheels") and the movie centers around a playwright and the relationships he has with the women in his life. The project was set up originally at Sony but the studio passed after they felt it was a little too whacked out, even for a Charlie Kaufman script. The project was picked up by producer Sidney Kimmel (ALPHA DOG) who will finance the project completely with Sony having first right of refusal on the finished project. No word on when filming might begin. And BTW, whatever happened to Kaufman's supposed horror project with Spike Jonze?...

Extra Tidbit: Charlie Kaufman started out as a writer on Chris Elliott's shortlived Fox sitcom "Get A Life."
