Spielberg on Ring 2??

03.06.2003

It was plainly obvious, before the 2 million DVD/VHS units sold on Tuesday, that THE RING would be reincarnated in sequel form. The surprise horror hit went over $125 million in US box-office due largely to strong word-of-mouth (the overwhelming reception on home video only sweetens the deal). So as DreamWorks plans the follow-up for an October 2004 release, we have to wonder what to expect.

Star Naomi Watts is contractually obliged to return for a RING 2 so that's a no-brainer. But DreamWorks has been in discussions with writer Ehren Kruger and director Gore Verbinski to return since December. A report at RingWorld suggests that Kruger will return but Verbinski may leave to pursue other projects. As a replacement they say - and this is a big rumor - their DreamWorks source claims Steven Spielberg, Wes Craven or Sam Mendes may take over. Craven I could see since he was developing a similar project with Dimension (PULSE), but his schedule doesn't seem to fit. Spielberg is another one with about 20 projects on his plate and it's looking more and more likely that INDY 4 will film sometime this year, after which he'll segue into TERMINAL with Tom Hanks. Mendes doesn't have a post-ROAD TO PERDITION project lined up but THE RING 2?? Somehow I don't buy it. Would be cool, I'm sure, but I just don't buy it. I certainly would love for Verbinski to return and I can only hope DreamWorks can persuade him to return. (I can also hope DreamWorks doesn't bleed this franchise dry with RING 5 and RING 6 like some cheap FRIDAY THE 13TH deal...)
