Hanks remakes Akira

03.25.2003

Unfortunately no, Tom Hanks will have nothing to do with the Warner Bros remake of AKIRA that Stephen Norrington is attached to direct. But Hanks instead is developing a remake of Akira -- Akira Kurosawa. DreamWorks has hired Richard Price (RANSOM, THE COLOR OF MONEY) to script a remake of Kurosawa's 1952 classic IKIRU for Tom Hanks to star. The film follows a "low-level bureaucrat" who, when he finds out he has cancer, sets out to impact the world, using his skills to build a park. Price hasn't begun the script yet as he's currently working on an untitled project that would reteam SILENCE OF THE LAMBS director Jonathan Demme with Jodie Foster. Hanks too is busy, currently filming THE POLAR EXPRESS with Robert Zemeckis and then moving into THE LADYKILLERS for the Coen Brothers. Even after those two project, Hanks is still expected to star in TERMINAL for Steven Spielberg so an IKIRU remake may still be some time off. But it sounds like a project that's right up Hanks's alley once he gets some free time in his schedule...
