Jackson to direct Kong

03.31.2003

LORD OF THE RINGS director Peter Jackson has decided on what his Tolkien follow-up will be: SCOOBY-DOO 2. No, no, I'm kidding. Jackson won't be filming the adventures of a talking, crime-solving dog, but will be concentrating his efforts on a big ape that takes Manhattan by storm. Yes it's THE HARVEY WEINSTEIN STORY. OK, I'm in a goofy mood this morning. (That should all change as the Miramax goons come and break my legs in a few minutes. For the record I'd like to say how much I love Miramax and respect the almighty Weinsteins.) Really, Jackson will remake KING KONG for Universal with a December 2005 release planned. PJ will begin work on the script for KONG as soon as he finishes work on THE RETURN OF THE KING, the last of the LOTR trilogy, which hits theaters this December.

Jackson reportedly mulled moving from the FX heavy LOTR saga to a smaller, independent production but eventually opted for the similarly complex KONG because the chance presented itself to direct his dream project. Jackson has worked with Universal for years before RINGS hit theaters on a script, the last version submitted in 1997. KONG, which will make use of Jackson's WETA digital FX studio, will begin filming in New Zealand in mid-2004.
