Creatures in The Woods

05.26.2003

M. Night Shyamalan is, without a doubt, one of the most original and creative directors working today. It's that simple! A small but significant part of what makes his films so alluring is that he has respect for the viewer. He doesn't spell everything out for us, certainly not during his films and especially not before. In a time when trailers give away entire storylines (not to mention the best scenes), Shyamalan keeps the nylon curtain open just a sliver, enough to pique our interest but not so much that we simply watch his films to see how the storyline progresses from point A to point B.

That said, curiosity hasn't killed this cat yet, so when I can, I still want to know as much as I possibly can about upcoming projects (it's a sickness), preferably without spoiling it for myself. So, when Shyamalan announced last week that the story for his newest film, titled THE WOODS, would "revolve around a close-knit community that lives with the frightening knowledge that a mythical race of creatures resides in the woods around them", I immediately wanted to know more. What "mythical race of creatures" is he referring to? Well, Stax over at FilmForce has done some research (incidentally, for his own script) and has compiled a list of possibilities. It's a fun read if for nothing more than a quick history lesson on the folklore of the region. Click here to read Stax's musings.

In UNBREAKABLE, A newspaper clipping in Elijah's workshop reads "Killer Virus Released at Airport". In TWELVE MONKEYS, the virus that was unleashed on the mass populace was released in a Philadelphia airport.
