MOVIE POLL: Why do you think "The Golden Compass" didn't fare so well at the box-office?

Why do you think "The Golden Compass" didn't fare so well at the box-office?

It fared fine, man. The film cost a lot of money ($180M), but I'm sure it'll keep going strong at the box-office and make even more money on DVD. I ain't worried about this film. It's GOLD!
I think the backlash against these "fantasy animals talking" flicks is starting. I'm not sure this one stood out all that much.
The movie sucked, plain and simple.
I have no idea, but maybe it's because the film's title included the word "compass". How exciting can that really be? A f*ckin' compass, dude. Green, gold, whatever...it's a compass!
Too much competition
Golden what? Never heard of it.

A major option that was left out was "Because religious groups are boycotting the film for its atheist themes." Every person I talked to about the film were adamant in their refusal to see the movie because the books it is based on talk about killing God. I had never read the books and I saw very little of the promos, but hearing this information turned me off even though I love Nicole Kidman. Besides, I'm so tired of these CGI-filled, talking animal fantasy films. They all just blur

People will go out of their way to see a movie if they're genuinely interested in seeing it. And not enough people really wanted to see The Golden Compass to make it a blockbuster. I saw a fair amount of promo, but I was "Meh."

theshadowalker is right: there was no way any religious groups would see this movie, no matter how much New Line pulled the anti-religious references.

And (ironically) those who liked the philosophical aspects of Pullman's books weren't going to support a watered-down movie version of TGC. Especially since the reviews for the film were so mixed.

Nicole Kidman sucks - plain and simple. She can not carry a film and she never could. Oh and she's married to an alcoholic country singer..to make matters worse. I Am Legend should hopefully help out the struggling box office

I honestly saw very little promotion for this movie. The previews did nothing for me.

There really is nothing out that interests me. I am pumped for I Am Legend and Dewey Cox though.

I think it was just a bad weekend for the theaters in general.

IMHO, in trying to appease the very people who wouldn't've seen this movie anyway, the studio actually alienated the people who would've.

That and, having read the novel, I thought the trailers looked and sounded...wrong. That is, the world I pictured from the novel looked far more gritty and gothic, and less glossy and SciFi/SF; and all of the movie's dialogue sounded like expository info-dumps.
