South Park team's next

06.25.2003

Looking to make the gag that "all actors are puppets," "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will direct their own script, TEAM AMERICA, for Paramount that will spoof action films with "Thunderbird"-type marionette puppets. The idea for the film came about after Parker and Stone came across a copy of the script for the upcoming Fox action flick THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. They thought the premise was so ridiculous, they would film the exact same thing with puppets and release it on the same day. After lawyers convinced them of the legal trouble that could get them in, the duo decided to concoct their own parody script and move ahead with the idea. After a pitch to SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT producer Scott Rudin - who's aboard to produce AMERICA - the project went ahead at Paramount. The film follows the generic story about an action hero recruited to stop the world's evil forces. Coincidentally, the show that inspired the marionette idea, "The Thunderbirds," is being turned into a live-action action film at Universal. Stone said, "It's amazing that a studio would make a movie out of ["Thunderbirds"] and take out the only thing that was good about the series." Filming will begin once the team finish up the current season of "South Park."
