Tarzan like Logan!?

06.27.2003

I don't necessarily share JoBlo's perspective on the numerous remakes of PETER PAN from this morning's trailer updates article. I feel that there is still a quintessential, live action PAN film yet to be made, and I am actually quite hopeful that P.J. Hogan's upcoming film will fill that void. I do however, have those exact feelings towards the horribly overdone character of TARZAN. I mean, on top of there being over 90 films based on the same story, look at what the last one did to Casper Van Dien's career, the next year he made SHARK ATTACK for christ sake! That's just not fair! Poor Casper. But alas, someone thinks there is still life in the old legend, and that person is the guy behind the scripts for the two CHARLIE'S ANGELS films, John August. This new film is being targeted as a big-budget summer release for Warner Bros. based Jerry Weintraub Productions, but the TARZAN in this film won't be quite as civilized as his predecessors according to August. "The movie versions of Tarzan always portray him as a sort of jungle hippie, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan is a much different character. He's more ferocious and wild, like Wolverine without the claws. That's the version we want to use." Maybe there is some juice left in this puppy after all. Regardless, it's still going to be hard to top Christopher Lambert's turn as the vine swinger in GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, KING OF THE APES.
