$200 million global box office means we will be getting a sequel to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Mar. 18, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Who says that January is the graveyard for movie releases? Apparently enough people went to go see HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS to make it worthwhile for the studio to greenlight a sequel. You wouldn't think a movie that grossed $54 million in the United States would be considered a success, but look at it from a business standpoint: the movie cost $50 million to make, so it recouped it's budget in North America Alone. The other $150 million is just gravy. Gone are the days where domestic box office is the be all end all for a movie.

Deadline reports Paramount, MGM and MTV Films will produce the sequel alongside Gary Sanchez Productions. Wait, that means Adam McKay and Will Ferrell produced HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS? Yet another drop in this bizarre bucket. Tommy Wirkola, who wrote and directed the first movie may return alongside stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. Renner and Arterton both have careers headed up, so I find it hard to believe that they would come back for a sequel unless they were contractually obligated to.

The problem here is not that HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS was a mediocre movie, it was a bad movie. I mean, it was not good at all. I can enjoy some crummy movies for the sheer enjoyment value of them, but HANSEL AND GRETEL was just bad on all levels. I enjoyed Terry Gilliam's THE BROTHERS GRIMM a hell of a lot more and that movie is pretty awful, too. This comes down to the almighty dollar and when you triple what you gross overseas, it becomes worthwhile to make. It is a shame when this movie gets such an easy greenlight and the VERONICA MARS movie has to take hard earned dollars away from fans via Kickstarter.

I have no idea how something like that can be a success and Dredd flops. Damn you modern audiences

Right on!

Yes! I had so much fun watching this movie with my friends on the 3D IMAX screen. Bring on another and I will surely be there. This is GREAT news!

Good!

The movie was a lot of fun, and Gemma Arterton is very yummy yummy, so I am happy to see that there will be a sequel..

Hansel & Gretel was actually a lot of fun. Yes it's ridiculous, and yes it's over the top, but it was FUN. The two leads oozed charm and badassery and the witches did not fuck around. I loved it for what it was and when the credits started rolling I was hoping it'd do well enough to warrant a sequel. It's not just about the "almighty dollar" they clearly set a sequel up and left breadcrumbs (see what I did there?) that the sequel could follow.

Cool.

H&G may not have been a great movie, but it was definitely very entertaining and a carefree time at the movies. But hey, this is coming from a guy who liked Van Helsing a whole lot so what do I know.

I can dig it. Would I technically call the first one a great movie? Maybe not, but it was also some of the best fun I've had in a cinema in a long time. Kinda like a Pirates of the Caribbean just for adults. Tommy Wirkola really proved that he could handle a larger budget and if gets more I'm confident he can put it to good use. Bring it.

There was a lot of worse movies out there and I enjoyed it a lot more than The Brothers Grimm. At least, H&G didn't pretend to be anything better than a B movie. Not nearly as good a news as Judge Dredd 2 would be but not bad either.

I really enjoyed the first one. I thought it had a Evil Dead element to it. Not many people liked it cause they thought it was a bit toony. But its really just a comedy ultra violent action thriller. The comedy being a bit hard to understand for most.

Hansel and Gretel II should be just as R-rated as the first one. The gore was part of the mirth and the fun. Also, some nudity is often a good thing (the first had a scene).

of course there is.

The movie's garbage (15% on RT) and turned a tiny profit, so why shouldn't there be a sequel? I'm sure it'll be a trilogy too, good news for Underworld as it will no longer be the crappiest mainstream supernatural franchise.

Great News!

I am so freakin' happy that this is getting a sequel! The first one was a blast and is one of my favorite films of the year and was such a good time. Sure it's wasn't the greatest movie in the world, but it was a blast to watch at the theater on the big screen. There was never a dull moment in the film and the film never took itself too seriously which was fine with me.

I hope they explore their origins a bit more and into their past because the first one left a couple of questions

I hope they explore their origins a bit more and into their past because the first one left a couple of questions unanswered. For example, explore Gretel's background in also being a witch and how Hansel deals with it. There are so many directions this sequel could go in.

But yeah, my ass is already there opening night.

First JACK REACHER, now HANSEL & GRETEL, movies that underperformed in the US but made money overseas and studios will produce sequels. JR cost 60 million, made 80 in the US and 136 overseas, for a total of 216 million. H&G is at 205 million global and worth a sequel. Now explain me how RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is a "big disaster" if it made 200 million only overseas, plus 103 million at domestic b.o. OK, its much more expensive, cost 145 to make, but made a total of 303 right now. I understand

Correction

Movie grosses are always a split between the movie distributor/owner and the theatre, generally at a 50/50 rate. A $54MM gross means a $50MM movie got about half its budget back, and thats not counting P&A. /nitpick

Let's get a kickstarter going to raise another $200 million so these studios can get their money without making another Turd Hunter.
