2007 Oscar noms!

01.23.2007

The nominations for the 2007 Oscars were announced this morning (by Salma Hayek!) and here they are in all their glory. Quick thoughts: Sacha Baron Cohen was robbed of a Best Actor nomination (though I'm thrilled Gosling made the cut) and Jack Nicholson was robbed of a nomination for his work in THE DEPARTED. Was Mark Wahlberg really better than Nicholson? Probably the biggest surprise was DREAMGIRLS, which led the nominations with eight total, failing to get a Best Picture nomination (most came with the three Best Song nominations it got). PAN'S LABYRINTH did surprisingly well (tying for third most nominations with six total) while CHILDREN OF MEN disappointed (no Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron?). BABEL, which some are calling "this year's CRASH" (though that's unfair cause BABEL is actually a good movie) picked up a total of seven nominations with a Best Picture, Best Director and two Supporting Actress nominations. Also surprising to me was that Clint Mansell didn't get nominated for his amazing FOUNTAIN score. Boo-urns. What are your thoughts? Who get robbed and jobbed? And remember, if you don't like what you see, you can always cast your vote for the Golden Schmoes!
