Brother Bear on Sat?

07.16.2003

In a move I'm not sure I understand, Disney has shifted the release of BROTHER BEAR from November 7th to November 1st, a Saturday. Yes, Disney will open a movie on a Saturday. Why not Friday you ask? Good question. Disney says they wanted to get the film out earlier to avoid competition with THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS and its own HAUNTED MANSION. The problem was, the Friday prior is Halloween when many kids will be out begging for candy or throwing eggs at cars. So instead, the studio will open on Saturday, a more kid-friendly day. But why not open on Friday anyway, even if it is Halloween? Even if only 10,000 people see the film on Friday, it's 10,000 more than if you don't open until Saturday. One thinking is that the unusual release date will give the film a little edge as far as promotion and publicity goes and wouldn't you know? - I'm here blabbing about it. The good news for Disney is that the only direct competition it will face is Fox's re-release of ALIEN which opens that Friday. I can't imagine many people will be interested in both but I could be wrong... BROTHER BEAR stars the voices of Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Clarke Duncan, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas and follows a Native American boy transformed into a bear. Hilarity, and presumably a song-and-dance routine, ensue.
