Pitt seeks Mrs. Smith

07.22.2003

Hey, if you can't get Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones sure is a worthy replacement. That may be the very issue for Brad Pitt as he searches for a co-star in the upcoming action film MR. AND MRS. SMITH. The film, which follows a domesticated husband and wife, each secretly assassins whose next targets are each other, was originally to star Pitt and Kidman but the latter may be forced to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with THE STEPFORD WIVES. Kidman isn't officially out yet, but Regency and director Doug Liman (THE BOURNE IDENTITY) are looking to firm up a replacement to keep Pitt from walking if Kidman is unavailable. Production is expected to begin on SMITH this fall with Fox likely taking domestic distribution. This project marks the second time in a month Zeta-Jones is up for a role in a film about a married couple on the wrong side of the law. She was up for the starring role alongside Jim Carrey in FUN WITH DICK AND JANE about a couple who turn to pulling heists to pay the bills. That role instead went to Cameron Diaz. Zeta-Jones has a hole in her schedule after she and hubby Michael Douglas recently decided to leave their next planned film MONKEYFACE. Pitt is currently filming TROY in Malta for a May 2004 release.
