Where the Reshoots Are

Jun. 2, 2008by: James Thoo

After all that hoopla surrounding Spike Jonze's work on WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, it seems re shoots have now been scheduled for the month of June in LA, with casting calls out for various stand-in roles. The news comes via Bloody Disgusting. It's unclear at this juncture just how much reworking is going to be done on the film, but it is plausible to think that it could be completely re-shot, perhaps even with a new lead actor. If you missed it, you can catch up on what has been happening HERE and over at CHUD.

Good lord this film is a complete and utter disaster. An artist's rendering of this project would involve him scribbling circles all over a piece of paper and then tying it to one of those Acme weights and tossing it off of a cliff. Blind optimism has me hoping Spike Jonze will yet have his way, but it sounds increasingly less likely with each update.
Extra Tidbit: Tom Hanks is a producer on this project.

I just wish we would be told what's going on with this, although I'm assuming the reason we're not is because nobody has any idea - Jonze or the execs. They need to get their act together. The burning question: if the reason for this debacle is because of a likability problem with the main character, didn't they read them darn script before green-lighting it?

I Agree with theshadowalker, Time Bandits was sublime filmmaking and we would definitely have a different movie if the Hollywood execs had the opportunity to fuck with it. I predict Jonze walking on this project, and I don't blame him. It would be a shame though but you can only push a man so far

You guys seriously need to chill, you didn't see the Spike Jonze version of the movie, maybe its pure crap that ruins the original story, how would you know? Wait to see the movie, at least, and if it sucks, and somehow you get to see the Jonze version, than you can get all angry and shit

Thoo, you need to be more accurate with your words. The film isn't a complete and utter disaster- Hollywood executives are.

One of my favourite kids' movies has always been Terry Gilliam's 'Time Bandits'.

And I shudder to think what today's studios would've done to that classic: 'Sorry, Mr. Gilliam...too dark...too weird...too scary...and, my God, you killed his parents...reshoots everyone!'

@#$%ing suits.

Studios

Why do studios always insists and do everything in their power to turn everything that is good and innovative in a film crappy? I'll tell you why that is, because at the end of the day it's all business and they aim to please the larger crowd, the mainstream crowd, the they think of your nice grandmother and their grandchildren and their classmates and your cousins your nice next door neighbor that has 7 kids raging from ages 6 to 12 so that they can exploit them with merchandising and

They don't care about us, intellect savvy but broke college students who happen to be movie buffs, we are not the target demographic...then why the fuck did they hired Spike Jonze to make this movie!

Artistry 101

Fellow reader:
Every piece of creative work is called a W.I.P.
Meaning it's a WORK IN PROGRESS. So when you break your piggy banks and go to the movies you wouldn't be totally disappointed (what satisfy you people who knows). In any case reshoot are not necessarily bad things and to totally disregard a movie even before its done production is very ARGENT and presumptuous.

So dear friends bitching about things that has nothing to do with you is just another way of demonstrating your

I plan on avoiding this film if these reshoots take place.
This is a mess, and I hope the people who are all pushing for the change realize what they're doing.

This makes me pissed. Does everything have to be nice and fluffy and pikn and happy for these hollywood bastards??!! Come on, its Spike Jonze. What type of film where you expecting? Guys a genius...you do not fuck with genius. YOu let it loose and stay thankful when you reap the rewards.

But if you get cold feet like hollywood often does when something is too "weird" for them....you loose big time.

Come on Hollywood!

These reshoots are very logical if it's the studio's aim to be UNIVERSALLY LOATHED by film fans worldwide.

Message to Hollywood: DO NOT HIRE DIRECTORS THAT ARE UNIQUE AND TALENTED IF YOU WANT FORMULATED MOVIES!!! Stop messing with directors that should be at the elite level, allow their visions through. Doesn't anyone remember the Exorcist prequels? The re-shoot sucked, the original better and would have been really good had it had a proper soundtrack. It's bad enough the MPAA screws everything up, so leave things alone.

Special note to the Weinsteins: You guys are awesome.
