The first thing that we were shown before this panel of stars came on to the stage was the new trailer for the film UNDERWORLD (now available online here), which incorporated some of the stuff from the original trailer (which you can also check out here), as well as a more elaborate look at the story, which pits vampires against wolves. As per the first trailer, the whole thing looked very slick, dark and action-packed, but who knows if the actual film will connect on the whole. To try and help us make that decision clearer, the stars, screenwriters and director of the film came to San Diego to discuss their September 19th release.

By the way, this has absolutely nothing to do with the movie or this panel per se, but actress Kate Beckinsale left her husband (with whom she had a 1-year old child) for the director of this film, Len Wiseman. But I digress into celebrity gossip… ;) Also, screenwriter/writer/bigass mofo Kevin Grevioux has got to have one of the deepest voices in the history of man. Anyhoo, here are the basic things that I got out of this panel:

  • Kate Beckinsale took this role because it was different from any of the other “female action” roles that she’d read before, most of which featured a shower scene on every other page

  • Screenwriter Kevin Therioux said that he came up with the concept for the film by pitching it as a ROMEO VS JULIET idea, but instead of the Capulets vs Montagues, it was werewolves (lycaans) vs vampires.

  • How did Speedman get the part? “I read it, I liked it, I read for it and I got it.”

  • This is director Len Wiseman’s first motion picture. He has, however, directed hundreds of music videos and commercials.

  • Beckinsale said that this project was “different” for most everyone involved with it and that it felt a lot like a “family project”. They apparently trained for a couple of months beforehand. She also said that she had once seen an interview with Angelina Jolie in which she had said that all of her training for TOMB RAIDER had been “profoundly life-changing”, especially when she pushed herself “to the edge”, and Beckinsale said that she now knew what she meant and agreed.

  • When asked how Beckinsale, who herself admitted to rarely ever even attending any PE classes while in school (“I was usually outside smoking”), was in handling the guns for the film, director Wiseman said: “She frighteningly picked up the shooting of guns like a pro.” The audience chuckled at this.

  • UNDERWORLD 2? When asked about the possibility of a sequel, director Wiseman said that they had actually already developed a “prequel” for the film, just for the sake of themselves and to know how all of the characters had developed into this movie. He also said that “There is currently a lot of interest in a sequel, but we will have to wait and see how this one does.”
