Sonnenfeld off Dick

07.30.2003

Jim Carrey is going to start taking it personally if Barry Sonnenfeld drops out of another one of his films. First the director dropped out of the Carrey lead vehicle LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, which was set up at Paramount/Dreamworks, causing that project to slide its production to later this year. Then, apparently because Carrey really wanted to work with Sonnenfeld, and particularly on a comedy, the two decided to have some FUN WITH DICK AND JANE. But now, just six weeks before production was set to start on that film, the GET SHORTY director has dropped out of the Columbia Pictures project as well, causing it to reschedule to March of next year, ironically, after production wraps on LEMONY SNICKET. I honestly don't get what the big deal is with Sonnenfeld. I mean, look at his resume:

BIG TROUBLE, WILD WILD WEST, FOR LOVE OR MONEY, MEN IN BLACK, MEN IN BLACK II, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES, GET SHORTY.

3 bombs, 2 all-but-dead franchises and 1 half decent flick whose success could actually be attributed to the fact that it was based on an Elmore Leonard novel... oh yeah, and John Travolta was in it. The man was a brilliant Cinematographer (MILLER'S CROSSING, MISERY, BIG), but as a director, I don't understand why big-name stars like Jim Carrey are drawn to him. He must smell really nice.
