Norrington off Akira!

08.04.2003

Some good news for most AKIRA fans I know who would prefer to see the film remain only in it's original form, but some truly sad news for film fans in general. Apparently, after the horrible experience that Steve Norrington had making THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN -- it has been reported that Sean Connery basically exercised his "star power" and hijacked the production because he didn't like the way the director worked -- Norrington has decided to exit all of his projects and leave Hollywood behind. The BLADE director has reportedly written letters to all producers he was scheduled to be working with in the future, which includes the live action remake of AKIRA and TICK-TOCK, to which Jennifer Lopez is attached to star, informing them that he would no longer be available. According to Countingdown.com, the latest issue of Wizard magazine also has a quote by the director, stating; "I have dropped out of all my Hollywood development deals because I want to pursue more creative avenues,". Sad news, indeed. Hopefully Norrington can eventually put this fiasco behind him and return to filmmaking, but in the meantime, Warner Bros. has said that this setback won't affect AKIRA, as they claim the film is back in development with writer James Robinson (COMIC BOOK VILLAINS) hard at work on the script.
