Pitt drops Smith

08.06.2003

MR. AND MRS. SMITH was shaping up to be one hell of a movie. Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman were set to star in the action flick from Doug Liman about a married couple who find out they're each assassins who's next hit is each other. It has a great premise, a great director and a great set of stars - or should I say HAD a great pair of stars as both Kidman and Pitt have left the production. Kidman left early in July as it became clear her busy schedule, filming THE STEPFORD WIVES and THE AVIATOR, wouldn't have time for SMITH. Pitt had a shortlist of actresses he'd approve of (including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angelina Jolie) but when no suitable replacement could be found, Pitt got antsy and moved on. Pitt was looking for a project to fit into his schedule in between TROY, which he is currently filming, and OCEAN'S TWELVE, which begins in early 2004. The project was scheduled to begin September 1st but without even the two leads cast, that date looks unlikely. The search for a new Mr. and Mrs. Smith has begun immediately with an offer out to another Mr. Smith, Will Smith, to star. Capt. Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp, was also mentioned as a possible candidate. Smith is currently in Vancouver filming I, ROBOT and Depp has ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO set for release this September.
