Big Momma 2?...

08.11.2003

If you haven't gotten a chance to read the new Entertainment Weekly cover story on this summer's crop of movies and all the surprises that were in store, I highly suggest doing so. It's a great read and they break down really well why some films failed and why some films succeeded. One of the points they brought up that I always try to echo here is that the glut of unnecessary sequels caused some films to fail. Their point is that a film like X2 is virtually begging to have a sequel because of the characters and their rich history beyond the origin tales, but a film like TOMB RAIDER, while a modest success, should never have been fodder for a Part 2. Well here's news of a film that is the epitome of "unnecessary sequel." Fox has announced BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE 2 is on the way with Martin Lawrence attached to reprise his role as an FBI agent going undercover as a old grandma. The film was a surprise success at the time of its release, launching Lawrence into a pay range he didn't deserve (see BLACK KNIGHT, NATIONAL SECURITY). Fox, apparently having not learned their lesson from the mess that was KNIGHT, was eager to get a sequel up-and-running and hired writer Don Rhymer (SANTA CLAUSE 2) to write the script. One would think after this summer's disappointing fare and the overabundance of sequels that people would've learned their lesson - you can have too much of a good thing - but I suppose not. BIG MOMMA is on the way again...
