Araki's next...

08.20.2003

Gregg Araki, the controversial director of such alienated youth themed films as THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE and SPLENDOR, has lined up a typical Araki-style cast for his next film that includes young television actors, a bunch of no-names and a hot Hollywood actress. MYSTERIOUS SKIN, based on the Scott Heim novel about a pair of (surprise, surprise) scarred and alienated youth, will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brady Corbet, Elisabeth Shue, Michelle Trachtenberg, Bill Sage, Jeff Licon, Chris Mulkey, Billy Drago, Richard Riehle and Mary Lynn Rajskub. "At the age of eight Brian Lackey is found bleeding under the crawl space of his house, having endured something so traumatic that he cannot remember an entire five-hour period of time. During the following years he slowly records details from that night, but these fragments are not enough to explain what happened to him, and he begins to believe that he may have been a victim of an alien encounter. Neil McCormick is fully aware of the events from that summer. Wise beyond his years, curious about his developing sexuality, Neil found what he perceived to be love and guidance from his baseball coach. Now, ten years later, he is a teenage hustler, a terrorist of sorts, unaware of the dangerous path his life is taking. His recklessness is governed by idealized memories of his coach, that unexpectedly change when Brian comes to Neil for help and, ultimately, the truth."

Rumor has it that Gregg Araki cast Rose McGowan in THE DOOM GENERATION after running into her while she was waiting for a friend and begging for change outside of a Health Club in LA. Araki was in a tight spot because Jordan Ladd (Cheryl Ladd's daughter) was forced to drop the role Amy Blue (because mommy vetoed it) right before filming was scheduled to begin. He was apparently so struck by McGowan's looks and attitude that cast her on the spot.
